Poison Ivy from dogs

Post by makey98 »

This may be kind of silly, but I have heard that dogs can get posion ivy on their fur and transfer the oil to humans. I have a beagle and a beagle mix that I try to run and hunt with, but they are house dogs for sure. Would like to get a real hunting dog, but 3 would be too many at the moment.

REgardless, has anyone actually had this happen? I am a paranoid individual and my grandpa's woods is very thick and posion oak and stuff everywhere. It makes me paranoid about going in the fall when it is still 80 degrees here in indiana before the stuff is dead. Am I just being sill? I have a 2 year old and a baby and I end up giving the dogs a bath every darn time.

I've caught it from mine. It sucks. But part of running hounds. I try to remember to keep some hand sanitizer in the truck and use it after handling the dogs. I "think" the alcohol in it , helps dry up the ivy oil. At least it can't hurt to use it , and since I've been using it I haven't got it on my hands. :crossfingers:

YES, it happens all the time and can even happen in the winter when one thinks the poisin ivy is dead. If the dogs waller in it running a rabbit they can very possibly carry it to you. Poisin ivy can also be had by being in the smoke if it is being burned as the oil gets into the smoke vapor. My wife is highly allergic to most of the poisin vines and she seems to get it any and every way possible to the point she has to have shots. Her doctor prescribes the pill packs and she always has them in the medicine cabinet. Some folks are just more sensitive to this kind of stuff and a little is all it takes. I never used to get it but as I gotten older I seem to get a dose of it every now and then but she gets it at merely looking at it.

I just got poison ivy a few weeks ago the first time all summer (i don't remember actually touching it so I must have got t fom handling dogs or the leashes, got it right between my fingers :( ) and I've been out all summer and that was the oly time.. Thing is, if you wash ur hands and bathe you dogs evey time out you should be fine (theres also soaps you can buy that are specifically for washing poison ivy off if you think you've come in contact). I used to be very paranoid bout poison ivy and such (about everything really), but with beagling if you want to do it just do it! It is sooo worth it in the end.
try and get them dogs out they might surprise you!!

You can also get it from cleaning rabbits. I got it so bad when I was a kid that I haven't gotten it since. Yes you can get it in the winter, it is just harder to catch, between more clothes, gloves and fewer leaves on the poison ivy.

I wear gloves when loading up the dogs for that reason.

I get it from my dogs or my dead rabbits every year, a couple times at least!

Now I always clean rabbits with rubber gloves on and handle dogs with gloves on if I think its around.

I agree with the above posts, I have found using the old fashion laundry soap Felsnaptha to be the best deterrent for the money. I get it easy and as long as I shower pretty quick after running dogs I am fine. I also think that the oil evaporates or loses potency kind of quick cause I never seem to get it the next day. In high school my buddy's mother told me to drink her goat's milk, she claimed that the goats ate the ivy so if I drank the milk I would build up an immunity. After a bad case I broke down and drank some of her milk and was not bothered with it for years.

I have just bought some ivy block and will use is in the areas that I know have poison ivy. I found it at the drug store. Also,I use Ivy dry when I do get it. Apply two times a day and it has only failed my once, when I got it from not wearing gloves cleaning rabbits, because I thought if I washed my hands right away I would not get it. :loser: I ended up at the docs on steroids :blackeye:

I have had one mild case this year from running with Redog1 at his favorite spot but the Ivy dry took care of it. Next time I go there I will use the blocker.

I do not take it lightly because I get it easily and it realy sux :hammer: :hammer: :hammer:

When I do get it it seems to only be me that gets it. So if I am getting it from the dogs they do not seem to be bringing it in the house and giving it to anyone else, as my dogs live with me and my family also. Has anyone hearad of a househound giving poison ivy to a non-hunter at home?

My dogs give it to me all the time. If you dont wash them they will continue to give it to you. Like others said, its just a fact of life where running rabbit dogs is concerned. The bennies far outway the itchin' any day!

Cooz. Thanks for the advice. I actually take them out, they just aren't very good and we don't have a great place to go. The one bluetick my wife got a pet store ( :( ) 4 years ago and he will open up on scent. Just all scents. Fox, coon, dog, cat, people. He backtracks a lot and doesn't really have a clue. He tries hard though. He will plow through thorns and jump over trees and has some desire for sure. I don't really know what I am doing, so we just run around and have fun. The beagle mix is a boston terrier and he likes squirrels more than anything, but he wll chase a rabbit if the beagle finds it and if he can see it, he will come along. He has such thin fur he has to wear a vest because he shivers like a leaf. Quite a trio we make! Ha. I am trying to find a place closer to my house so I can go more often. My grandpa has about 30 acres about an hour away, but it so thick and old, not a lot of running lanes for the dogs. Lots of coyotes that eat all the rabbits.

Thanks for the advice fellas. I will keep washing those dogs afterwards.
