concrete questions

Post by D Thompson »

I am going to pour a 12 by 70 slab of concrete, should I put in expansion joints or should Icut control joints? Also how many of each and how far apart? The slab will be about 3.5" thick. Should I put down a base of gravel or just put it in the dirt?

Just poured a 18 x 28 concrete slab. Didn't put any joints in it but I put plenty of wire in the bottom of it. 3 1/2'' deep was my thickness. I don't like using fiber in the concrete cause the fibers stick up out of the concrete and it can't be good for he dogs feet. Slick the concrete real smooth. It helps in cleaning up the poop. The dogs really like it !!!!!

D Thompson i pour concrete for a living and just poured a 24x13 pad for my kennel you need a good 3 to 4 inch base of stone down and compacted we use 57's around here whitch don't need compacted because they are 98% compacted when dumped pour a 3 1/2 to 4 inch pad devide it up equal and make your cuts i did not finsh mine out real smoth just because of when you finish them real smoth they are like ice when they get wet and in the winter they will be really slick.
any questions feel free to give me a call.

I do it also for a living if your going to poor it all out in one time cut joints in it about every 10 foot then one at 6 foot in the middle of the width. Use sand on the bottom dont put it right on the grass it will crack.

I RUN A CONCRETE READY MIX PLANT YOU MUST PUT JOINTS IN IT OR SAW IT EVEN PARTS OR ANY OFF SETS YOU MAY HAVE IN IT. ALL CONCRETE CRACKS KNOW MATTER WHAT ANY ONE SAYS. :D :D

been a concrete finisher for 10 years :???: and i would saw cut your control joints the next day. for your size i would cut it every 10' and then at 6' down the middle. make your cut approx 3/4" to 1" deep and use either a good fill sand (compact it good) or pea gravel (dont need to compact) for a base. i would not make it too smooth of a finish. give it a "light broom" or a "wet trowel" finish as it will smooth out over time anyhow. also use a good quality concrete sealer on the slab. for 12 x 70 you would need a couple gallons if you spray it on like a clear coat.
