amen jim another thing i see a lot is first 10 min of hour judges give checks away like they are free the last part of hour after they figure out the dogs you cant buy a check but mouthy dogs over running the line ruins lots of chases jay hershberger said he judged more mouthy dogs at the world hunt than any other year.they would jump a rabbit get to first turn over run keep barking and never figure it out

Re: Extra mouth in the Check ?
I have seen just about evey scenario in 44 years of running hunting trialing with beagles. Some dogs are said to be good check dogs but some often cant make the turns and caused the checks they just scored on.Yep its true the bus driver will make the most mistakes being the leader.Other times as this topic addresses you have extra mouth some from being a fool with some being a superior nosed hound.Case in point several years ago Joe Wingate and myself were hunting an island at the beach where it was sandy salty windy coditions. I had see a rabbit slip out and run down the beach while the hounds were running another rabbit. That rabbit was just shot.I called the dogs to me it took about 5 minutes for them to get to where i seen the stray. The wind was fierce and it was very cold to make matters worse it was sandy. One little bitch like a bird dog was wafting the scent out thee air tonguing here and there for almost a hundred yards no other dog could smell it She took it in the cover another 50 yards turned it into a run.It was an incredible piece of hound work that I wished i had a video camera with me that day.I tried running her in in arha but she minused out but many times her cold trailing often produced jumps or long checks.I seen her run on ice and circle a rabbit 2 x with dogs with akc/arha wins places some had championed out none hardly barked the rabbit was killed by my buddy the second circle he said my god what an incredible nose on that dog.She would run a baby rabbit til she caught it if u didnt get her off of it.She was stolen out my pen about 3 weeks later. So its up to us to see if you are feeding a hero ot zero by getting off the tailgate and running where you can see both solo and against yop knotch hounds. If its too thick, a fool can take longer to expose. But after 2-3 x u should know with some pretty quickly first hour or less.If it sounds too good to be true take a good look. As u got a hero or zero!
Re: Extra mouth in the Check ?
I almost got rid of the best dog I have, when he was a puppy. He had extra mouth on his checks when he first started running. But after he was run for a few months that stopped. He had a littler mate that did the same thing and he strightened out too. Some times you have to have patiences with young dogs.
Re: Extra mouth in the Check ?
I totally agree that there are dogs with Big noses that might bark a little early before the rabbit is up,but in my opinion that's totally different than the Check Area, when the dogs already have the rabbit up,and are in pursuit of it,I dont want my dogs to have any extra mouth within the check area,I only want my dogs to bark when they have the actual line, and are advancing it with forward progress, JMO...

Re: Extra mouth in the Check ?
I run huge nose dogs so I get the extra mouth. As long as my dogs are barking in the check area I have no problem. If they are smelling rabbit I am ok with it. People who have not run big nose dogs have no idea of what they are capable of. If this dog can smell this rabbit going across the black top how can you say what she is capable of smelling. I don't like the extra mouth but for me the rewards are far greater than not having the nose power. We ran dogs with average nose for years and were always making excuses why they could not run. Another thing is we lose very few rabbits. I guess they are dumb for barking but I sure like it that they are going to run the rabbit.
If you don't like or hate the extra mouth I totally understand but for me I like going out and knowing we are going to adjust and run the rabbit.

Re: Extra mouth in the Check ?
I have to agree with Mark. Like I said I don't like the extra mouth but When you have got the nose you can get the extra pop in the check. I agree I'll put up with a little popping off and I've seen it with some dogs with good nose but I wouldn't put up with it if they move out of the check and continue to open...Nice video clips.
I run along a long stretch of railroad tracks by my home. The trains don't run during day light hours due to all the residential homes. I run my dogs on that stretch all the time and if they didn't have enough nose I would loose the rabbit everytime they hope on the track. I am fortunate that my dogs have pretty good noses. And they keep me running all winter long.

Re: Extra mouth in the Check ?
mark, I watched those videos and to me that wasn't extra mouth ... That was just solid tracking except maybe the dirt video.. I didn't really see to many "checks" at all in those videos and only one dog gave slight extra mouth... them are some fine hounds even if its not my speed...
I have a dog that can straight screw up a check with his mouth and wants to run the rabbit so bad he barks like an idiot at the loss and has the loudest bawl ever and will pull other dogs forward or back when he barks and can mess a run up
but he also is usually the one who jumps the rabbit and retrieves it when its shot.. so i feed him

Deerhost,
The tracks are our favorite place to run. I have seen your videos of running on the tracks. It will bring out the best and show you real quick if your dogs have the patience and nose to run.
This is a really small baby rabbit that they run down the tracks.

Re: Extra mouth in the Check ?
I have a question? Sometimes people associate big noses with slower dogs. What do yall think requires a bigger nose? (1) Dog that runs head up (nose up not down on the ground) and is fast....(2) Slower dog that runs nose touching the ground at slower speed? I'm not bashing either style just wondering what everyone thinks about the possibility of the slower dog getting more scent due to contact with the ground at slower speed.....I would think the heads up dog would need a bigger nose to stay on the scent line because of his speed and distance from the ground?
