dose anyone on here run or ever run with a harrier? if so what can you tell me about there running abilities. hunt/serch, drive etc. wouldnt mind finding a bit bigger hound for the snow.

Slade, from what I have heard ,harriers run real fast on the line, and overun alot. Not sure if you run hare or cottontail, but not really good for cotttontail. I have a swiss hound LULU,which runs both, and is about 22" tall, and I really like her , run about same speed as a fast beagle, take a look at some videos on my website, www.bellmorekennels.com, anything with LULU, or my youtube page, I have tried to breed with my beagles, but no luck yet. Going to try again next heat if interested, or can give you info on the swiss breeder

i am a bit north of you in the catskills and run a lot of hare in jan and feb and this winters powder on top of powder put my beagles out of the game. i am looking for a legger hound. not that i want to get out of having beagles just want to be able to run when i have off!!! i have dial up and not able to see videos, tell me abot the swiss?

Maybe someone could give us a short history of these dogs. I always heard they were supposed to be kind of a cross between a beagle and an English foxhound. Usually about 20" or so. Does anyone have them and use them on cottontails?

Look like a blood hound but the size of a pointer, like 50 to 60lbs, and handle much better than beagles,very attached to owner. They have have excellent noses, and run a med fast speed, will hunt hard through thickets and jump alot of rabbits. The biggest fault mine has, is that after a really hard check or a long loss, she is more worried about getting back to me than figuring out the check, I guess no dogs is perfect,but if you want to hunt in deep snow, I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND

I was set on getting some 5-6 years ago. I called every breeder I found contact information for. The breed is about gone. Every single breeder I contacted was in it for show. They didn't even know if their dogs would run game. In the end it seemed like it would be more work than it was worth.

I think it would be easier to cross breed with the fox/hounds. I know guys that have done this with pretty good results. Just like any cross, you will have lots of culls, but if your comitted to getting some big 18-20 inch hounds it can be done, but the end product wont be a beagle.

I love to talk to guys that have done this, or are doing it. These guys are usually looking for big nose as well.

There is a guy in Texas that created his own breed of hound.
He calls them "Arzone Hounds".
I think he crossed Swiss, Beagle, and Basset.

If a guy just wanted "big" beagles, why not cross 16" parents and keep the biggest pups?
A guy bred a 16" female to my Rambo dog, rambo's dad was also 16".
Produced a male pup that pushed 17.5"

I think it was back in the 90's. Not sure what month or year it was . Someone one this board might have some old copies that they would share with you. unfortunately I gave most of mine away.

One of the best snow dog I ever seen was a 1/2 beagle 1/2 walker. It had the body of a beagle and the legs of a walker probably 19 or 20 inches tall and it could flat out haul on a hare. I've heard of some guys breeding them for hare in northern michigan years ago. You might try looking into that.
