Re: Fox Hounds
i field trialed running walkers for 25+ years, raised 3-5 litters per year for most years and ran 1-4 times per week. when i was getting ready for a trial the hounds i was going to run in trial i ran every 4 days rain or shine. I have owned some real hounds and placed in alot of hunts. i am wanting to get back into those so bad i don't know what to do, I LOVE GRAY FOX / COYOTE / RED FOX RACE!!!!! i want to outrun ya and it is alot easier to get a outstanding foxhound than it is to get a decent beagle. I started buying into beagles 3-4 years ago have owned some back in high school but nothing registered like i have bought into and i have not seen one as of yet that fully suits me, my dad says i want them to fast but i know what i like and how i want them to hunt. HUNT LIKE A BIRD DOG (FAST) AND IF NOT IN RACE, HE BETTER BE SLINGIN GRAVEL TRYING TO GET THERE!!!
the walkers i owned would do that and jerk some fur!!!

Hogbody: I run the same area in which I run rabbits. Very heavy brush and cover and lots of area to run in. You would be surprised how close a fox can run with beagles after him. It takes a very good beagle to keep one on the move but there is nothing really quite like the race. My beagles are rabbit dogs first and fox hounds second but the race is always the most important factor.
Charley: I think it was ol Andy Brown that tried to keep them July hounds back in the day. I never did like them too much. Wern't white enough for me. Know what I mean.

Sorry for the double post guys.
Cshamp: You speak my language. If they ain't trying for the front, they aren't trying at all.

July is its own breed of hounds. Alot of guys have crossed them in hopes to get the best of both breeds but July Walker is not a strain of Walker just a cross of two seperate breeds.
We run more coyote than fox just because there arent many fox here but the dogs are bred the same and the races are similar. Coyote will run circles as well just bigger.
Heres a few pics of my pack of dogs. Coyote hunting can be very exiting! Last one is a video just click on it.

Take your kids huntin and you wont have to hunt for your kids.

Half Beagle and half July sure makes a good rabbit dog. Speed and mouth.

Re: Fox Hounds
They would be too fast footed for you bucks! Would wake up all the farmers with their Bugle mouths so you couldn't run them at night.
Just two of the negatives in that crossing.

Alabama: I like em fast and loud. No farmers where I hunt. No rabbits either. Just fox and plenty of them. Ran one last night and saw it about 3 times as the dogs crossed the paths. I had six hounds out after him and 3 of them just could not keep up. Have to sell them as rabbit dogs I guess. As a matter of fact, one of them just won't run a fox. Breaks my heart.

Re: Fox Hounds
You know I was just kidding with you about your dogs speed.
I like them fast too and yes, I have a cross, Not too slow either.
Don't know how would do on fox, but can sure run a Canecutter. Black and Tan, long bodied, pretty dark.
Most go over 15.
