Fox Hounds
Does anyone run Fox Hounds anymore? I've talked to a couple of old timers around here that used to have them. Sounds like a good fox chase would be a lot of fun. From what little I've heard, sounds like a fox will run a big circle simmiler to a hare?

Gray fox run a smallier circle than a red fox. They are fun to run with beagles. The beagles I use to have would run a fox. The dogs I have not have never ran them. When a gray fox gets tired they will cliam a tree. If a dog will bark treed, you will find the gray sitting on a limb.

Hogbody, I run fox in Michigan all the time. It is definitely better than hare running. Really, tough conditioning and they run close and wide opening.

Bucks I knew you would hark in on this one. I've heard you talk of your fox running beagles before. Sounds like a lot of fun! Do you run on a lot of wide open land? Do you use primarily beagles or do you have fox hounds to?bucks better beagles wrote:Hogbody, I run fox in Michigan all the time. It is definitely better than hare running. www.gingersridge.com has some good pic's of July Walkers . Very leggy fast hounds, usually yellow/red, like a yellow lab . Very courageous hounds. Other stains are the Trigg, and the Goodman. hope this helps.

When Buck was a pup,his Daddy Western Allen,Me and a host of others, now running fox hounds in the great beyound, would meet at the fire and turn about 25/30 hounds loose. We had awesome races most times all night long. All had Walker hounds, and they were good ones.
I went to the National Foxhound Field Trial in 68 and took a Trigg for a friend,it was a thing to see over 600 hounds turned loose at one time Derbies and all Age ran together.I beleive their was a man in Mi that had Julys but never remember him running with us. Those were the good ol Day`s Huh Buck.

I used to go with some boys that had real foxhounds not pen dogs or racing dogs. They would have 2o head or more and call a single dog out of the box and get a fox on his feet and start packing to em.Would catch a couple foxes a day.If you ever get a chance to go on a real foxhunt do it.I still have walker hounds but they are deerdogs.Aint nothing like 15 or 20 hounds running the toenails off a grey fox and the more the run him the stronger he scents.
Re: Fox Hounds
I went to a 500 acre pen here in Ga when i moved here, spectator only just wasn`t the same. We ran in the wild Waterloo recreation area around Chelsea Mi.

Big Dog Pace, Those were some good old days. I enjoyed as much as you did and those trials at Lauringburg were like going to Heaven every Fall. I have never heard anything to compare with 10-15 broke Walkers in a bean field in the late summer. Harvey Hardison still has some true Fox Walkers in New Bern and Johnny Corbet has a real pack with some of our old stock in them. One thing I'll never forget is the mouths on the July hounds. Used to see them crossed with beagles, usually July in color.
