The days of a mans word meaning something are long gone

Post by Dan440 »

I purchased a dog two weeks ago. Me and the guy i got the dog from both drove to a half way point and did a cash in hand trial. The very next day I ran the dog for three hours and all he did was sight chase the other dogs, and we were into some thick rabbits. So on my way home i called him and told him i did not think it was going to work out, but he told me my money was good and that he knew the dog was a good dog and talked me into running him the rest of the week. After running him the rest of the week he was not what i wanted so i call and we arranged to meet that weekend. I called to meet up with him and he told me that he did not have time to meet me, and that if the dog did not run for me he probably would not run for anyone else and he would just mail me my money. I waited for a week and began to call him yesterday all day and left numerous voice mails, and continued to call him today and still no response. so i just wanted to let every other beagler know to not deal with Tony Wright or his brother Will Wright from southern Indiana they screwed me over and i am sure in not the first or the last. I sure just hope what comes around goes around. So if you see them or meet them at a field trial go ahead and let them know you know they scammed Dan a fellow beagler out of $300

Sorry for your experience. When I got into beagling on a more serious level I assumed that because we were all sportsmen that guys could be trusted to do what they say, say what they do, and advertise honestly. I got bit in very much the same manner as you and although it was a hard lesson I learned something from it. That fella will get what is comin to him, Karma is a bitc#. In the future dont buy a dog unless you see it roll first and it will eliminate a bad taste from ever forming in your mouth again. Or do what I did and surround yourself with guys you can trust. There are some great guys out there but there are a few turds too! Good runnin! Fudd

Ive been back into beagles for two years and have met some great folks. Trouble is it take just a few to screw it for all. Found out you have to be very, very careful. Good that you named names, at least they are outed and maybe not do this to someone else.

The ugly side of this recreation definitley finds a way to run good honest people out of it, sometimes there is reasons for things happening, and sometimes bad people just find this past time as a way to make money. :bash:

Just to offer another perspective....I don't know either of the folks involved in this situation...and yes, it does sounds like this guy is getting screwed.

BUT, I know from experience that a dog can run the fire out of a rabbit and you sell him to another guy and he won't do squat for the the new guy. Some dogs don't adjust well to new dogs / environment / handlers, etc. and then some dogs don't miss a beat w transition. I have a male that I've put in a few trials and if I handle him, he will place. If I send him w/ another handler, he won't do squat. Just the way he is....some dogs are like that.

Second, I try to give folks the benefit of the doubt...I'm not a doormat, but I try to give folks a chance to do the right thing. It sound like from you story that its been one week since he said he would mail the money to you. And then you spent a little over 1 day trying to reach him by phone. I'm just saying, give the guy a chance to return the call before jumping on here to crucify him. He may be on the lake fishing all day w/ his grandson or at the hospitol w/ a family member. Who knows.

Again, I don't know all the details, but seems like your jumping the gun a bit to crucify someone over $300.

Odds are that he probably is getting screwed but I agree with you that stuff does happen and a week with one day trying to reach them by phone is probably a little early to crucify the guy. I know personally it can happen. I mailed some money for some collars and a donation to a youth hunt to NY to a guy a month ago or so and I transposed the numbers on the mailing address and got it back in the mail and had to resend it. Ten days after I had first sent it he recieved it so stuff does go wrong purely by accident. Wich is why I would have gave it a little longer before I trashed the guy.

Pete to your part about the dog running like hell for one guy and then not doing squat for the new owner I guess I dont understand where that comes into play here? Doesnt matter one way or the other. The dog was out on trial and if it doesnt suit the guy the money should be returned? Thats the whole point in the trial.

Id say unless the guy has been taken by aliens or in the hospital, that you will never see the money. I hope I am wrong and I have been wrong many times. Thank God I dont have to buy dogs any more.

mobeagle-

sorry, I can see the second half of my message may not have been clear. I understand the dog was on trial and if the guy wants his money back then he should get it back. Period. The point I was trying to make was - Just b/c the dog won't run for the new owner doesn't mean the seller was dishonest about his discription of the dog.

And again, yes it sounds like this dog jockey is pulling a fast one.

I would like to respond to the title here. I think there have always been scoundrels and men that did not keep thier word but now we have the world wide web that allows con artists to perfect thier craft. Fortunately for the cons we have the internet to out them.
That all being said I have met men and women through running beagles who I would trust completely. Their word is golden with me. I have also met scoundrels who lied to my face and cost me a lot of money. My best story is the $1000 I paid for a dog site unseen by a big time LP trialer who, if there is any justice in this world, I will meet in public some day and out.
My best advise for Dan440 is find a people that you can trust and speak the same language you do when it comes to describing a dog. Someone that will tell you straight up, "you won't like this dog, he is not your style".
The days of a man's word meaning something are NOT long gone. You just have to find the right men and, most importantly you have to BE that man.
