I bought some purple cattle tags yesterday, I was just wondering if you guy put the whole thing on the collar or cut them in half, 1/4's ect....Thanks Scott
I fold mine over and use the ear tag tool and snap them together to make a loop and just slid the collar thru them. I usually change mine every three months during the spring/summer/fall months.

Please read previous string of posts in the topic titled "cow tags" started by maddogkennel, dated Sun Apr 12, 2009 6:34 pm.

It was an interesting and informative discussion about the use of cow tags on beagles. Some are concerned about long term health issues as these tags are intended to be used on very large animals not medium sized dogs.

I am using Joeymans idea and buying the large dog sized frontline plus and splitting it up between my dogs.

Thanks for sharing that idea Joeyman.

Seems like a good safe way to save some money.

Something to think about for you nonbelievers of cattle tags. We all know that any type of insecticide is not good for animals or humans. When applying frontline or any other types of these repellents, you are basically putting these chemicals on the skin of you best friend, therefore being absorbed in their systems.
On the other hand, these cattle tags never touch the skin of your dog, therefore, never entering the blood stream. ;)
Use whatever works for you, but one must ask theirself, am I killing my hound.
I have used both, and they work, but have decided to go with cattle tags for this reason. Been using them for three years now, and so far so good! Just something to ponder on!

But has a lower price tag on it too. i heard many, many, many Beaglers have been useing them for a lot of years with no problem from up North to down South to out Mid-West and decided too use them myself if i thought it would hurt my Hounds i wouldn't use them :!: :!: :!: THANKS AGAIN :!:

with ticks being so bad, keep in mind about lyme disease. it is really bad and if not treated it then is bad on the hound. lyme disease is a bad thing and vet says it only takes 1 bite with a tick that has it.

Thats what I've done for years. The cost is the same for the bigger weight as it is the smaller so I just spit it in two and save a little money that way.

I too have done this for a number of years!! This year I was lucky enough to find Frontline Plus for sale @ Menards for $34.99!! A three pack of the large breed dose is enough to treat my two dogs for 6 months that works out to around $2.92 per dose!! It is a very good way to save money!! The Frontline Plus does a very good job killing ticks the only problem is it can take 8 - 10 hours! My hounds are inside dogs so I'm not to excited about bringing ticks into my home so until I find a decent repellent it looks like they will have to be quarantined in their kennels until the Frontline does it's job! I've found a couple of natural repellent recipes that may be worth trying, once I try them I'll post the results!!

Has anybody used both frontline and the purple ear tags?

I'm thinking I'm about to, I'm using the tags now but still find one or 2. I always check the dogs directly after and have never found one attached but they're not completely repel'd either... If repel'd is even a word :loser:

Anyways, I don't wanna overdo it, but I'm sick of seeing ticks at home too.

You fellows have got it made. Where I live you cannot even walk through the natural area in my yard without getting at least one tick. Where I take the dogs to run I will intercept between 6 and 10 crawling up my leg every day, if I stay on the paths or roads. If I walk into the grown up paths 20 ticks is not out of the question. I can pull 10 to 15 off the dogs the day after running especially in their ears and under their front legs. I have found nothing that will keep ticks off dogs more than 1 day. I have been using Bio-Spot spray recently. It will kill most of the ticks on the dog, but does little to repel new ones forom climbing on. I may just go back to 5 % sevin dust once every 10 days on the dog and in the houses or Happy Jack Kennel dip II.
Where's the earth shattering kaboom ?

Last year my vet recommended I vaccinate my dogs because I hunt them! I was about to tell him go ahead until I asked him how many cases he had seen! Turns out he hadn't seen any cases in 2 or 3 years so I decided I would wait!

From what little I have read about this Lymes is one of four different deseases that can be caused by ticks. All can be deadly and are difficult to recoginize and diagnose early on and there in lies the danger. If not diagnosed soon enough it can be to late to save the dog. This could happen over a period of a year or more. I get mine vacinated for lymes as part of a booster for rabbies in order to keep my dogs license up to date, so I will probably keep getting it but I need to ask if the shot I am getting will prevent these other diseases as well. All of these are what is called Tick Born Illness or (Desease) or TBD.

joey,
that was more than likly lyme disease.its very bad and worse if not treated. im going to go with a lyme-vac. you can get it yourself for about $160 and thats with special shipping for vac. you give a dose and then 2 to 3 weeks later another and your good for a year. ive heard good things about this vac and im going to it. frontline is really the best way to go for a monthly treatment with the shot that i just spoke of. these ticks are not to be taken lightly. we as beaglers spend a huge amount of money on dogs/pups, kennels, feed, vets and lot of etc. and would be a shame not to protect the ones we love to see run the bunnies. IMO and that does not matter alot, take a few extra bucks and protect them because the good or even great ones are never here with us long enough.
