Question for any field trial format.

Post by Casey Harner »

I would like to know from anyone who has seen a clean line control dog that totally dominated a pack and got out ahead of that pack, name the dog if you can remember, name how far on the front was he/she and name the format. I rather hear about the dogs that can control the line rather than the one who cheats or swings... Thanks!

I'll start....IFC Steve's Shooting Star it was at Java Village SPO on hare. She was anywhere from 30 to 50 yards ahead of the pack and she wasn't breaking down. We actually seen where the pack was having checks at spots she went straight through.

I can think of two that I witnessed right off hand. First one I was marshalling 13" females at Vermont BC AKC SPO-H in May of 07 I think. A hound named Leah's Little Angel was smoking the winners pack. 100 yards out in front of the pack at times. She was as clean as any hound could be expected. If the pack caught up on a minor check should would eventually just hammer it out again and control the race. She won the trial. She did have another licensed win and 115 points. She was for sale not too long ago, I think because she is now 9 years old.

The other time I was judging this winter at Upper Hudson AKC SPO-H on snow. The hound that was dominating was Dave's Mighty Barkliy in the 13" male class. It was one of the most dominant displays I have ever seen. I don't believe there was a person in the gallery that would have questioned him winning even other handlers. It was amazing to see him put us back on hare after hare in some tough winter running. He was never very far in front but he was incredible in picking the checks and on the drive he controlled the race. I can honestly say it was difficult to place the next 4 hounds because he was so dominant. Barkily has 5 wins and 117 points. I am pretty sure that at least 3 of those 5 wins have been on snow.

FC Green Bay Holly Hunter, Borderline SPO on Hare....I wouldn't say she ran in front of the pack a huge distance but she didn't leave much left over for her packmates either.
