Re: no more oversized dogs
it dosent matter witch format u run in u have to follow the rules of that format and if u are breakin them in any way then don't get mad when u get caught.and as far as the bad bite, crocked legs ,and short ears has nothing to do with runnin in the field.but if they try to put them kind of dog's on the bench then they will be picked apart for that stuff.and yes i do run little pack JUDE do u and i have ran a dog or 2 that was over at one time or another but if i got measured then i had nobody to blame but myself.turbo blood throws some bad bites every now and then, and BRANKO stuff throws alot of short ear but that don't matter as long as there not benching them.

I disagree....I might buy into the overbite not making a difference but short ears and crooked legs do.cpuckett wrote:it dosent matter witch format u run in u have to follow the rules of that format and if u are breakin them in any way then don't get mad when u get caught.and as far as the bad bite, crocked legs ,and short ears has nothing to do with runnin in the field.but if they try to put them kind of dog's on the bench then they will be picked apart for that stuff.and yes i do run little pack JUDE do u and i have ran a dog or 2 that was over at one time or another but if i got measured then i had nobody to blame but myself.turbo blood throws some bad bites every now and then, and BRANKO stuff throws alot of short ear but that don't matter as long as there not benching them.
Long ears are what lifts the scent up so it's an important trait and a dog with severely crooked legs generally can't last all day at the same speed a straight legged dog can.

Re: Much bigger problems !!!
JUDE wrote:Dixie , there's nothing about LP that's going to better the breed... The reason I asked you the question is because I had a hunch
that you hadn't ran in LP . Some LP "beagles" don't look like beagles others have other breeds up close . Many are too long , too rough ,
too wide in the check , too mouthy , back trackers , short ears , crooked legs , bad bites and all these are allowed to run . If they want
beagles to look and run like beagles they may want to change over to AKC . I'd say NKC has much bigger problems than oversized dogs .
I won't even get into the flaws & variations of measuring a beagle this post .
Dont totally knock it. A few years ago there was a half feist running in ARHA and she was one bad mammy jammy... I would have fed her.

I'm not worried about size. It's the "Crooked Pencil"
that needs cleaned up.

Re: no more oversized dogs
I went to a trial where I know for sure the dog was over 15 in ukc and the owner said half the time he gets in the other half he don't. He just acts like he is gonna smack the pee out of the dog when they measure it and it crouches down under the bar...most judges wont take the time to stand the dog right. My trial dog is only 13 1/4 so big dogs gain a step but i don't mind a bit except to get a laugh at it and give the owner a ribbing if he is a good humor type.
It does give people a reason to Bi*** if their dog looses i guess...
I still don't know if crooked legs make a dog really run worse or not.... most any dog can run 4 hours or so without it showing to bad even with crooked legs.. It is ugly as crap though...

Puckett I agree with you. This new system will be interesting. I wonder how it will all play out.

Re: no more oversized dogs
Been a long time coming for little pack!
I have never called a dog out, but could never understand how people bitch and cry when someone does call out a dog they know is over
Its a rule and they knew it before they entered the dog.
Hell why not give a dog 5 minutes to work up a strike or award a 5 second check??? Its the same difference.
Jude I would like to invite you to come run LP in MI, you will see some nice clean running hounds doing it right. Those big swingers and cutters get it broke off in them on a regular basis. In fact these so called little pack dogs took 1,2,3 in big males, a 2nd in little bitches and an NBQ in big bitches at a midwest spo hunt here last week.

.
Can you imagine showing up at the world hunt next year and trying to measure close to 700 dogs, what a nightmare.[/quote]
UKC measures every dog at each hunt, be it a club hunt , or the Nationals with 400-500 dogs entered.

Re: no more oversized dogs
I remember one time down at the ole Coal Country beagle club, some boys from up cam down and brought some big hounds. Well, they must have drove 7-8 hrs to get there so no one wanted to turn them back so I here ole Billy tell'n Joe, "send'm down by the woods". Well, the "woods" was down at one end of a long corn field and the other side joining the woods was a south facing bank that caught the morning sun that the deer liked to bed on after a nights feed. I thought it was a terrible thing to do, but sure enough that cast was scratched for off game'un and no hard feelings and nun the wiser. "daplomacy" was what I think Billy called it...

Ive never been to a UKC event but do occasionally check their results and have never seen them draw more than 150-200 dogs and that was at their world hunt.

Re: no more oversized dogs
Thats funny
I know one guy at the local trials who judges has a dog 100 percent broke and if he thinks a dog isnt broke he will go to a deer hole and get them scratched.. I've threatened his life if our cast ever runs into a deer while he is judging
so far i haven't been on a cast with him yet, but he keeps sayin thats where we are going if he draws me... hope my dog is broke

UKC Nationals is an open event pulled like 400 dogs last year and I think it was on the same weekend as the ARHA world hunt. Thankfully this year the dates are different unfortunatly it still falls on the same weekend as youth turkey season. Another reason you wont see near the entries prior to this year is you could only handle 3 dogs because all the open registered dogs go out at the same time then Champions etc. so you couldn't take 2 dogs in the same title bracket and handle them yourself. Most of the time if you have more then one advance past a few rounds someone else has to step in and handle for you because finals casts go out at the same time.
Yes the world hunt pulls less because its based on a different qualifying requirement they host like 20 qualifiers and only accept the top 10 dogs from each all dogs regardless of title compete against each other for there spot because they dont split them up by titles theres only one winner.
As for the measuring thing it can be done pretty easily open measuring the night before the hunt for 4 hours or so then the next morning for a few hours before deadline it doesn't take but 5 seconds to measure a dog. As for general size every format has dogs that push the bar I think a standard should be kept it's like anything else if you keep looking the other way before long it will get out of hand besides people know what they got it's not like it's a surprise if you got a big dog you know when it's close.
