Re: Purina Puppy CHOW
I mixed purina one puppy and iams puppy for my current pup and he is by far the healthiest shiniest pup I have ever raised. I had to cut him back to one feeding a day at about 11-12 weeks because he was so fat. He now is getting the adult Black Gold mixed with that puppy mixture to ween him to just Black Gold. His stools are always firm and he energy that is second to none I have raised. I have kept him wormed out good as well. I hope he slows down growing, but that is a good problem to have!! Good luck with it Joeyman!!

Very well said, It is nothing more than "crap" Purina feeds are and always have been the most over rated feed on the market- period. It doesnt matter what formula, blend, or flavor if you see the checkerboard square it is of low quality. Kurt

Re: Purina Puppy CHOW
When i was feeding Black Gold black bag that is all I would feed my pups from the time they started eating solid food. It is supposed to have all the good stuff that puppy chow has in it. They would always have plenty of energy with good stools and a good shine to their coats and yes I would have to watch how much I fed them because it would push them.He now is getting the adult Black Gold mixed with that puppy mixture to ween him to just Black Gold. His stools are always firm and he energy that is second to none I have raised. I have kept him wormed out good as well. I hope he slows down growing, but that is a good problem to have!! Re: Purina Puppy CHOW
I fed 4 Health as well, good stuff. Grain free. Basically TSC's version of Taste of the Wild with a little lower price tag.
I however have fed my dogs the same Taste of the Wild formula since I brought them home as puppies (2 years now). Never had any problems and they look awesome.

Re: Purina Puppy CHOW
Well, contrary to what seems to be the popular opinions, I have fed Purina Dog Chow and Purina Puppy Chow to my retrievers, coonhounds and beagles for the past 40 years and have no complaints with it at all.
A good friend of mine that I used to run with several times a week switched to the Purina Pro Plan and was always raving about it and trying to convince me that I should be feeding it.I just couldn't buy his arguement that it was such a superior feed.First off was the fact that he was paying something like $38.00-$40.00 for a 30 something Lb. bag.Second was the fact that no matter how hard or how long or how often we ran, my hounds ran just as fast, just as long and looked just as good as his.I could see no difference in comparing our hounds condition ie coats, body conditions, stamina, energy, etc. To me the proof was in the pudding as they say.The bottom line is that I have to feed something that I can afford and the "deseigner" dog food such as ProPlan ,Eukanuba,Sceince Diet,Royal Canin, Nutro, etc. are just too pricey for me to feed a half dozen hounds.
Maybe I'm just a dinosaur in my way of thinking but I think the dogfood companies are taking us for a ride with a lot of their marketing stratagies these days. They've got the public believing that your dog has to have "sirloin,or wild caught salmon, lamb or rice, trout, venison and vegetables, etc" to be "all he can be" and if you feed him anything less you are doing them a disfavour. Can't say I buy it.Not saying that these ingrediants aren't good for our hounds but think it may be overkill and just a lot of marketing. After all how many of us can afford to feed ourselves and families the best top of the line that the grocery stores carry? If I ate that way I'd have a hard time getting off the couch.LOL. I understand that a athlete [or hound ] that is at the height of competition and being continiously physically stressed may need more than just maintenance but most of us are not pushing our dogs to the limit or to that extent.
Years ago I used to coonhunt with an old fellow from Georgia.Robert was a bachelor and probably one of the hardest hunters I've ever known. He kept English Setters and Bluetick coonhounds and during season he hunted quail all day and coon all night. He was a serious hunter and the kind you don't often see these days.If he had a dog in his kennel you could rest assured it was top notch.Every morning he cooked up huge trays of cornbread and cracklings on a woodstove and that was his dog feed and he told me that he had fed his dogs that way for 50 years. His dogs always looked good and would hunt as long as you cared to and were long lived to boot.So.............????????????
One other thing you might consider before you knock Purina too hard.Have you ever been to the Purina Center in St Louis ? I don't think there is another dog food company that I am aware of that does more in research of dog nutrition, dog health issues, breeding issues, genetic marking or does more to support / promote a variety of hunting dog, show, hearding, coursing,go to ground and agility events, etc.than Purina. They seem to put a sizeable amount of their resources into the dog fancy.
As always JMHO.

Re: Purina Puppy CHOW
I can remember a looong time ago it was the #1 Feed. As others have said dogs would maintain bloom , wheight etc. I can remember when i thought it was the only dry food available. I usually feed Sportmix or Diamond but sure not throwing out Purina.

read the ingredients/nutrition information on purina puppy chow and ol'roy puppy....they are the same and ol'roy is cheaper. i haven't fed either in a year so i am unfamiliar with the red stool problem, i have two pups in a litter i am getting this weekend and the guy has been feeding ol'roy. so far no red stools.

Re: Purina Puppy CHOW
Just like alot of people on here I've tried different brands and I have my favorites too. I know whats worked for my dogs and had compliments on the few pups I've sold. That is good enough for me.
You just have to find what works best for your dogs. There's no doubt that TC has raised some awfully fine hounds. Buddy seems to have some real lookers too from what I've seen on here. But that doesn't mean your dogs will do good on the same food they feed. Just means TC and Buddy have found what their dogs respond to best.
I think a couple years back somebody posted a link on here to an independant study done on dog foods. The foods were tested and judged by a couple different factors. I think one of them was the amount of useable protein. It was an interesting link and I would dearly love to see someone dig that up again.
Not saying that's the gospel but it's a start.
