I'm trying to teach my pups to "here." Tonight I chased them for 30 minutes :angryfire: . Any of ya'll ever done that or am I alone in this? Good grief I was mad. Probably a good thing I didn't have a shock collar on them. They know what the command is, they've done it plenty before, but not tonight! I am still calming down, LOL.

Fleetwood those Dingus hounds don't want to quit!!LOL :D I just socialize mine as much as possible. Always have the pups loose and call them to me a bunch while out feeding the others. Mine know, no(real well), back, come on or come, they all know there individual names as well, hunt them up or look in here as well.

I used to raise and work w/ bird dogs a lot and we taught them quite a few commands. With beagles I have found there is not nearly as many commands to teach.

I teach them "Down" - when I want to put a lead on them I want them to lay down.
I teach them to "Come Here" and to respond to the "Beep on their Collar."
I teach them "No".

For the most part the training is "on the job training" - I've found w/ beagles the best training for a pup is to just send it out w/ older experienced dogs. There is not really the need for hours of yard training like we did w/ the bird dogs.

The dogs also learn and pick up on many things I say.
"Let's get in there and point at a thicket" - they will typcially go in for me.
"Here he is" - if I jump a rabbit or see one, they will come to me.
Etc. they learn what I'm saying in the field, but little of it comes from formal command training.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR ME TO TEACH IS___________-------------------------SHUT THE H#$% UP..... AND LORD BLESS THE DOGS SOLE THAT RUNS THE OTHER WAY WHEN I CALL IT.. WHEN I YELL THERE NAME THEY BETTER COME RUNNING.. OTHER THAN THAT JUST RUN A RABBIT , COME WHEN YOUR CALLED AND DONT BARK FOR NO REASON.. :???:

most all my hounds know
sit pretty
stay
shake
laydown
come and load up

MY SMARTEST WAS ELMER he would
sit pretty
shake both paws
stand up and high five
lay down/role over
sit treats on his nose he would thow them up and catch um
fetch the paper
shut the door (standard door)
open the fridge and get beer (towel on the handel of the door)
he was also a rabbit machine

i do not have a dog of this intellagence anymore got some clused but are not on his level, but i took him every where everyday with me i didi not leave the house with out elmer.

with the time spent on them the beagle are one of the smartest breeds out there
