This is just my veiw of having Patch's for a while ,25 yrs. Only ever had 1 that would offer to offgame and he was 1 that was not what I call pure patch , he had a outcross in him 1 generation back. Not saying thats why he liked deer either .Also my dogs handle better than most folks kids will , guess I got the good kind.
I got a explaination for why some see wild and crazy run'n no handleing run anything Patch Hounds but if I post it some will get pissed off so I only tell it to folks that come here , face to face . If you notice this pops up about every 5 yrs , the wild & crazy patch's

I think the reason mine was is 2 men went to New York and purchased 6 Patch hounds hot of the press as Jack put it they took them 6 which they had some already that came from the main kennel and started breeding well you can only go so far with linebreeding from the same kennel and they had them strung out what i seen they was very high strung hard headed and didnt want to do nothing but run run run with thier head up never put thier nose to the ground I think it was the breeding i was getting from the kennel mine come from SUPERIOR PATCH was the name on my papers is all i know

I ran 2 Patch dogs who are 1/2 brothers on Friday. I dropped them on the ground at 2:30 PM on a warm, dry, windy afternoon. We were in a large cutover with briars too thick to walk through. I sat on the tailgate and the dogs went into the briars and 30 minutes later they jumped a rabbit about 100 yards from where I sat. They ran him for 45 minutes by my watch. Were there checks? Sure, but short ones. Did they set tight on the checks? No, but they kept the rabbit running. These dogs are almost 3 years old and were hunted the past 2 hunting seasons.

A year ago these dogs had a hard time keeping a cottontail going- they were just too fast. This year they settled down, learned how to come back to a check and work it out, and to slow down when scenting is tough. I think Patch dogs mature slowly. I don't give up on them until they are over 2 years old. I have seen some I would not keep, and have got rid of them. I hunt and run dogs with guys who all have dogs from field trial bloodlines, both cottontail and hare. The thing they keep saying about my dogs is that they will go into the briars and find a rabbit. You don't have to go in there with them. I didn't do anything to train them to do that, the Patch dogs do it naturally. Some of my friends think my dogs are too fast, but when they want to hunt all day in places too thick to walk, they always call me!

I don't think every Patch is perfect- I have seen some I wouldn't feed. What I do say is that the average to better ones please me.

Mine suck on Extreme conditions!!!! I dont have many times that I need a dog that can run in 2 feet of snow and Ice. Seems like when conditions are bad the rabbit will turn, but my dogs dont!
