Got Skunked today.....literally!

Post by Briarhoppers »

One of my dogs got sprayed by a skunk while hunting today. Man it is potent...he had to have taken a direct hit! Made my nose burn when I had to put him in the dog box...poor other dogs that had to ride w/ him. Back at the house now and my dog box, truck, hunting jacket, chaps, everything stinks. I walked in the house after shedding my clothes in the garage and my wife said, YOU STINK!

Advice - I heard a few home remedies but curious what all ya'll have done that works.

put everything in TOMATOE JUICE and let it soak...then wash down the box and dog with tomato juice and then Dawn dish liquid...the natural juice .acid and the dish liquid will do the job
Run your dogs....not your mouth!!!

Have used tomato juice. It is most effective the sooner it is done after the skunking. Have also used the commercial "skunk-off" with success. Used it the 'day after' on my SUV, leads, collars and dogs and it works. Always keep some on hand now. I had two hounds stretch a skunk and had an SUV at the time. Just plain nasty!

Hey... been there done that with the skunk thing!!!!!!!!! I was only four years old when my dad was carring me coon hunting we got it good too. The tomato thing works the best i guess. The good thing though,,,,,,,,,,, is for several years now i have noticed when you start to see the skunks traveling SPRINGS NOT TO FAR AWAY.

I was there beside Briarhoppers and he aint lying! I cared the dog to the kennel and it feels like your nostrils are on fire when your that close. Scenting conditions were rough but when the thought of getting skunked cam to mind I didn't think it would happen literally and figuratively. Oh well, the more times out in the woods the more crazy things will happen.

1 bottle hydrogen peroxide
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 teaspoon Dawn liquid dish detergent
Keep ingredients separate until ready for use. The chemical reaction of mixing these together not only neutralizes stink completely, but foams up quite a bit. So it is best to combine it all in a spray bottle container and shake when ready. A large bowl will do in a pinch.

Spray on dog until coat is soaked. Keep out of eyes. (BUT remember to rinse out eyes immediately and thoroughly with cold water if skunk spray has gotten into them.) Wait about five minutes and rinse.

It also works on human clothes:
Use half recipe dilute in a gallon of very warm water. Soak 1/2 hour

O it was not that bad, in my truck. :D I am so glad we did not get a direct hit, and it was the dog. The skunk could not have been far from us, it was strong. It happens, I had fun, the running was hard but it was fun. We need to get together and go again. It's hard to get the stink off, that skunk off works about the best I have ever used. Those two males I got that afternoon are nice.

Pztrailman is right I had the best results with that. The tomato juice does not work at all. I wish you the best and hope that it never hapens to any one else cause it sucks.

Thank yall for the replies. Seems like the skunks have come out of the wood work the last week or so. I hope my dogs run the other way the next time they catch scent of a skunk.

Duckblaster - I'd like to see your new males go. Let run again and hope for a much better day!

I would love to go run again any time y'all want to. I can't go this Saturday we have the TWRA youth rabbit hunt. If y'all want to bring the dogs there always looking for some one to take the kids hunting, they are going to feed all of us breakfast and lunch and give us places to hunt. It's a kids only day, we just provide the dogs. They said last year was a good turn out. They have a skeet shoot after for the kids that don't get to shoot any rabbits that way they all get to shoot and have fun.

You get the stink off em yet?
