looking for stud/bloodline w/tons of hunt
I'm looking for a proven stud/bloodline that produces HUNT/GRIT/DESIRE, in the ny/nj/pa/va area. I have a nice line bred female that goes back to Mr Bill. I have the speed that I want and kennel manners and nice honest mouth. I want to breed this spring to a proven bloodline. I do not trial, I'm a rabbit hunter that needs dogs that will hunt/jump day in and day out. I've been looking at the yellowcreek/dingus stuff from laneline kennels, also some studs with ranger dan/kalagha blood.
any help is appreciated.

You may also check with Smokes Creek Rick Giermata He's in NY, at 716-602-5017 or RJGwoof@aol.com He on the board as Rick G.
If your looking for tons of hunt and ABILITY Laneline and Smokes Creek just about have it covered! If you research the pedigrees they primarly lead back to the Dingus, and other greats.

If your looking for Kalagha and Mr. bill. Give Gary Slick a call in P.A. or click the link below to his website and then click on each one of his field champians names and you can see the pedigree on the dog. I live in NY and hunt and pleasure run mostly but I try to make at least few AKC SPO field trials a year and Gary has got some of the best 13" dogs running in these trials. He is a very respected long time beagler I've seen some of his stuff run and he is a real nice guy and has lots of Kalagha and some Mr. Bill in his kennel but no Rangerdan. If you want to see some Rangerdan stuff you might want to contact Honey Hollows Kennel ( the Slocams in NY) Good luck. I run Rangerdan stuff but I keep only females ...Deerhost

gfedor, I am very familiar with Mr. Bill hounds. You will get a lot of big nose hounds out of this line. Mr. Bill hounds will consistenty produce the biggest nosed dogs out there in my opinion. While, they will search, most don't have real good hunt , but are relentless in pursuit of a rabbit. deerhost, gave you some good advice on Gary Slick, he lives in Hop Bottom Pa. Kalagha dogs when bred to Mr. Bill hounds will give you the hunt you need and will produce a large percentage of jump dogs. I have Bred to Mr. Bill , and Kalagha. If you want to speak with a real expert on the matter Call Les Blondino, in Madison Heights, Va.

nate johnson in richman va has 3 or 4 tough awful bawling males.
Re: looking for stud/bloodline w/tons of hunt
I have seen alot of Dingus bred hounds go and own a couple decent ones. Hunt is one of the things that makes them such a powerful gun hound. They could use some more nose in some instances and they can be a little rougher than some like with that being more in the lines of lack of patience in the check. They will find the rabbit in a check just not as close as some guys like. Mine run about as fast as the scent allows and suit me very well. Dingus hounds with ranger dan could be the best of both worlds with very good hunt and some added line control and patience. We have some of that going on here in WV with some guys having pretty good success with it.

Re: looking for stud/bloodline w/tons of hunt
I agree with gwyoung, I have ran with some of Mr. Bill Stuff at the SPO trials here in my area and at least 3 that I can remember lacked hunt, Actually one just stood around and its handler tried to hide her from the judges but she got picked up anyway. But as a side note I had a 15" male for a while that went back to Bill that had LOTS of hunt. So who knows, I do know that I was told by a friend who watched Mr. Bill run that he threw extra mouth at times, and that some of his off spring had extra. The male I described above also had a extra mouth in the check area. But I guess every line has its good and bad. I guess as long as you know what your looking to get from the breeding and to not double up on bad traits from both sire and dam then your OK...Good Luck Deerhost, P.S. I was at Gary Slicks the last time one of my females were in heat and I told him which stud dogs I was thinking about breeding to and he took each one out solo and with one of my dogs for me to watch run no questions asked. Unfortunatly my female did not take.

Gene, if you are looking for hunt, grit, and desire, I have 2 15 inch males that may be of interest. Check out http://espomagazine.com/pedigrees/7667.htm That is Petey's ped and the other is his sire Jamie.Jamie is 7 1/2 years old and even though he his somewhat crippled from lyme, he still will go all day and Pete has desire like there is no tomorrow. Give me a call if you might be interested. 570-407-0725 (cell phone)
Re: looking for stud/bloodline w/tons of hunt
Gene, in my experience over the years I have found that there is basically 3 categories of beaglers especially among registered beagles and field trialers.
1. Breeding Pedigrees to Pedigrees and hoping to recreate one of the greats within the pedigree without actually knowing very many dogs in those pedigrees, bragging about dogs they have heard of or read about but never seen, but yet hoping for the best.
2. Breeding to what currently wins in field trials, over and over again. If all you do is field trial, focusing in those specific traits to score in 2 or 3 areas may be ok, but not if you’re a gun hunter. To be a successful field trial dog you have to have greatness in 3 or maybe 4 areas, but can get by with 3. To be a total package “great” gundog you have to be well rounded in 6 to 8 areas. It is a whole lot easier to breed and focus in on 3 or 4 areas of a dog than it is 6 to 8 areas. Fact is, some of the greatest field trial beagles ever were the culls of some of the great gundog “hunters/breeders”.
3. Breeders that breed for the total package? They are far and few in between, regardless of the advertisements that you read. Dogs that search for the line {& hunt for the sitting rabbit for the jump}. Have a great nose {& the brains to use it right}. Run with the competitive speed, drive and desire to “catch” {& has the patience to trot or even walk it out when conditions force them to}. …etc… I have seen many dogs that “stay busy” and search hard for the rabbit’s line, but they jump very few. I have also seen many with the competitive speed, drive and a great nose, but they lack brains and simply can’t put it all together and others from the Shooter line "and other lines" that can smoke a rabbit but lacked "hunt", not search! the searched hard, stayed and looked busy but lacked what I call real "hunt".
I said all that to say this, the total package breeders are absolutely far and few in between. Dogs I have witnessed do it right consistently “all around” is Smokes Creek, Laneline and the older Branko stuff were real good too. {before field trialing profit played a part and changed how many breeders breed, when breeding to win trials, it changes the perspective of how many breeders breed, to the point that today’s dogs from a certain kennel don’t even resemble the dogs they started out with producing} I am sure there are a few more out there, “but not too many”, but these are the ones I have seen myself and are what I believe you are looking for.

Nice Post! If i was looking for GUN dogs Laneline and Larry Perry are the first names to come out of my mouth. These dogs are the real deal and the guys will help you any way they can. Larry sells a few hounds on the board and I believe there was a recent post....

If you want HARD hunt, brains, nose, and line control, Mike Crabtree's Reject dog will clean up after a lot of hounds. Old Branko blood crossed with Buzzsaw breeding. Give him a shout and he'll tell you exactly what Reject throws with no B.S. Located in Virginia.

Re: looking for stud/bloodline w/tons of hunt
Joe Lane came by here Monday for some Running and to pick up his pup. We ran for about 3 or 4 hrs on snow and the temp. was about 15. and if your thinking about breeding to LaneLine Lone Ranger your on the right track. He just turned 2 and he can put on a show he has extreme hunt, great jump dog, can handle a rough track and walk it out if thats what it takes, has a big mouth and used it right and he's not to hard on the eyes. this is the 2nd time i got to run with him. He will hold his own with ANY dog you put him on the ground with.
