Tape worms??

Post by BCBeagles »

I just wormed a male with the new PPO wormer who had tape worms as he passed a section of one. I did not see him pass any dead worms in the pen?? Will hounds pass tapes as they do rounds in there stool dead??? Thanks for the input!!!

Some wormers cause the worm to dissolve in the intestine and you will never see it pass. I had the same question in my mind a few weeks back. I did a google search and, if I remember correctly, Panacur and that type medicine will cause the worm to pass. Droncit and that family of medicine causes it to dissolve.

Fenbendazole which is active ingredient in Safeguard and others will cause sections of tape worms to pass. This happened to me a few years ago. It was the first time I had used Safeguard, now I use it regularly.

FYI..
Depending on the wormer ... it causes the protective coating on the worm to be removed which in turn causes the worms to be digested. so no you will not see them passed in the stool.

Also... Fenbendazole does not kill all types of tape worms. More importantly it does not kill the tape worm rabbits get....which your dogs are probably the most exposed too.

To be safe buy Fish Tapes ...it kills all kinds of tapeworms.

Alot of your tape wormers will only kill the body the 1st worming and leaves the head to grow thats why some wormers you give 3 days in a row the 2nd and 3rd days of worming gets rid of them Drontal plus gets them 1st worming Thats all i will use little high but good wormer

True that fenbendazole does not treat for all tapeworms BUT it does treat for the species of tapeworm that rabbits carry, Taenia pisiformis.

dogs cannot get, repeat cannot get the type of tapeworms that live in rabbits. A tapeworm that lives in a herbivore host such as a rabbit cannot, repeat cannot live in an omnivore such as a dog. The types of tapeworms that dogs contract come from other dogs or omnivores not rabbits. Buy the generic drontal tablets that chip eisenhut sells, worm every three months like clockwork, every four to six months if you dont normally have problems with worms and you will be fine. Drontal or the generic equivalent will kill all worms with the exception of heartworm, that is another topic unto itself.

team fudd could you tell me how you came across your beliefs.I'm not try to start anything with you, it just seems the only time I am bothered with tapeworm is when the dogs are exposed to rabbits.

Tape worms come from fleas. Rabbits often have fleas. Even if your dogs are free of fleas, if the eat a rabbit with fleas, they are probably going to get tapeworms.

I notice this topic comes up often on every message board I visit. I am not trying to knock anyone here , perhaps, where you live and hunt is different than my area and whipworms, hookworms, heartworms, and tapeworms are rare and therefore it is rare that you would need to seek this information. In my area I would be surprised to learn that anyone who has owned a dog for more than 6 months would have to ask what to use to kill and prevent any of these parasites. There are several different medications to kill most of these worms. I will tell you what I use and why, of course you can use what you want , I just want to make a recommendation. For round and hookworms , use any wormer with Pyrantel Pamoate.
To get hookworms, roundworms, WHIPWORMS, and Taenia tapeworms, use anything with Fenbendazole. Fenbendazole will not kill the tapeworm your dog is most likely to have.
For tapeworms, I use Praziquantel.( the tapeworm your dog is most likely to have is not the Taenia tapeworm,) any wormer with Praziquantel will eliminate all species of cestodes ( tapeworms)
Heartworm preventive, I use Ivermectin.
I have never had a flea problem so I have never treated for them.
Sounds complicated and expensive but it is neither. I use Equimax paste horse wormer once a month on all of my dogs, this will prevent heartworms and kill all of your tapeworms, I use Safeguard paste Horse wormer when I suspect Whip or hookworms. Cheap and 100% effective.
Also some years ticks are a problem. I use the Purple Python insecticide tags intended for cattle. very effective! I have been doing this for years and my dogs have not had any health issues. I don't believe I have had a dog to die that was less than 12 years of age, and none ever had kidney, liver, or any other kind of trouble. I have had some live a little past 15 years of age.

Good point i knew fleas was the cause ot tapes But think about them getting them that way There are several types of worms that dogs get several ways
