Powdery snow, How do your hounds fair in it ?

Post by RunninHard »

Mine not so well, the snow is like powder (about 6"s), kick the snow and it goes with the wind (like if you were to throw sugar in the air)
The last 3 days has not been bad temp wise (24-28, with some colder temp windchill's) but the snow is junk, Just wondering how your hounds fair in these same condition's ?
We have plenty of good power on the ground with the 6 we have but just cant seem to keep a track going, We have dropped all 6 down to just 2 at a time and it was the same, Last week before this snow hit they ran great, some tracks were ran for 1hr + before the rabbit was shot

In our area we're faced with ice on top of snow. Going to see how bad we do this weekend.

Good luck Joey hope you have a good hunt, here not so good ...lol, But will still be out there, Hounds are hunting hard just not being able to do much once the rabbit is up, The snow is so bad you cant even see the tread marks from your boots in it, its that dry and powdery and all the brush/trees have frozen snow caps on it , the pine limbs are almost touching the ground, its not wet heavy snow it is frozen on there

The conditions are like that pretty much all the time here, low relative humidity and very little moisture in the snow. You need a hound with some serious nose power, and that's a tall order to come by.

I feel that "dry" powder snow is super hard to run in and wet snow is ok but the rabbits are hard to stir... you literally have to be a a foot or less to get them running..

For some reason I have had trouble with when the now thaws and running in Mud.... dogs can find em but not hold the line like I would expect.. I love hunting in any weather though---
God isn't real, Beer is good and people are crazy, there I fixed it.

Powder snow, yep I run it it almost all winter long a foot or so deep. The kind of snow you can walk in all day long and still have dry boots when ya get home. Like Norwester said, big nose and lots of patients .

I love it. Every year I look forward to the snow and hunting rabbits in it. This year the wait was killing me as I have a young dog that I wanted to try on the snow. BTW very happy with his performance. :D

Usually when its all powder i like to solo dogs or just take 2 at a time. We had a few inches of powder and took 2 dogs and they did a great job.
