Who did this?

Post by Steve Preston »

Found a gut pile in my starting pen yesterday. No head,no fur, just a gut pile....... I think it might be an owl. What do you guys think? Anybody have any ideas how I eliminate this problem?

Take a rat trap and nail it to a stump. Put it on a stump that is small so the owl will have to fly in on it and not land beside of it. Put a piece of meat on the trap. You will catch the owl I have seen it done and it does work. I seen an owl and alot of hawks caught this way.

A hawk will pluck it's prey.
Any owl I ever seen will carry it's catch to it's roost/den.
I think the neighbor boy got him a rabbit...

I'm with Patch here animals eat gut piles they don't leave them. Seems you got a 2 legged critter in your pen :bash:
A mans EGO is one heck of a weight for a dog to carry!!!!!

Wild animals will eat guts. I have to agree with Patch.

I agree with Patch also but I just hadn"t said it. If an owl or hawk caught it you should have seen some fur some where also. IMO

I have seen just a gut pile left by a predator. Can't remember which one I was told would do this on occasion. May have been as Fulcount said, an owl. Just as I have seen only the hind legs taken. Here in PA it is predator heaven. They seem to love it here in the mountains.

It is Predator Heaven here in PA. I like to help with the new habitat introduction program we have in my area. I find any Hawk , fox or owl and I feed them some LEAD and then i take them to the river and introduce them to a new habitat under some rocks where they can learn to get a long with the crayfish and bottom feeders in the water. pretty nice program and very helpful to the rabbit population. Makes me sick when you drive down any of our interstates and see the giant hawks perched along the road watching over an area. We counted 51 hawks on a 3 hour trip to Lancaster last saturday

Down here if you walk up on a coyote and they don't run off with theircatch you will sometimes see the front half of the prey and the spine.

The Great Horn Owl will always leave a gut pile. Remove all trees and build lots of brush piles near the feeder. Try to get the law changed to control there numbers. Good Luck, George

You got a better chance getting the economy figured out than getting a law changed on the controling birds of prey population.
