my best advice is to look him up, and to know your handlers rep. cause i have bought dogs wthout there papers from the owners and they delivered them to me , but they were good to there word and with a few follow ups you can be sure before you buy the hound. hope you catch the sucker, this would pee me off to.

Papers?

Post by gus »

If you have to put pressure on the guy to get your papers, what makes you confident that the papers you receive belong to the dog that you bought.

You didn't say anything about the dog though....Did you buy a rabbit dog or did you buy AKC papers? Papers don't run the rabbit....Here's a little bit of advice. Don't trust anyone you don't know. Them days of a hand shake and a man's good word are over..

Chad not nessesarily!! What they said to me was NO PAPERS NO MONEY! If you dont see the papers they recomend that you not purchase the dog! You can make a formal complaint against the person BUT it does not mean that the AKC will do anything about it! It says right on thier paperwork that they are not an arbitrary body and have no control over those making false representation!

BUT I WAS told by them that if i had a bill of sale giving the Breeders name and address and the Registration numbers of the sire and dam or a litter registration number that they would send the Breeder a letter But cannot force them to give you papers

The Rules and Regulations of the American Kennel Club stipulate that whenever someone sells or delivers a dog registerable with AKC, the dog must be identified by providing the buyer with a properly completed AKC Dog Registration Application for a dog not yet individually registered or a properly completed AKC Registration Certificate for a registered dog. If neither of these is available, the person delivering or shipping the dog must furnish the person acquiring the dog with a bill of sale or written statement, signed by the seller

If you are buying a dog that is supposed to be registerable with the AKC you should realize it is your responsibility to obtain complete identification of the dog or you should not buy the dog. Failure to get AKC "registration papers" causes more grief for buyers of pure-bred registerable dogs than any other problem except sickness. It has long been common practice to explain the inability saying "AKC hasn't sent the papers yet." The essence of this and similar excuses is that because the American Kennel Club is at fault, papers are not available. The fact is that the processing of any AKC registration item takes approximately three weeks. If a breeder is doing his paperwork in a regular, careful manner, there is ample time to obtain the necessary "papers" from AKC prior to sale of any puppy. When "papers" are not available at the time of delivery, it is a red-flag warning sign to exercise extreme caution.

The person from whom I got my dog will not give me papers. What can I do?

Under AKC rules, any person who sells dogs that are registerable with the AKC must maintain records that will make it possible to give full identifying information with every dog delivered to a new owner. This identifying information may be stated on a properly completed AKC registration application, on a bill of sale, or on a written statement, signed by the seller, that gives the dog's full breeding information as follows:

breed, sex and color
date of birth of the dog
registered names and numbers of the dog's sire and dam
name and address of the breeder

Buyers should not accept a promise that this identification or the registration application will be sent along later. It is the buyer's responsibility to obtain complete identification of the dog as described previously. If sufficient information to identify the dog in AKC records is not forthcoming, the buyer should seriously consider not purchasing the dog.

TC hit the nail on the head, AKC is not going to do a whole lot about an individual not getting his papers, there is a well known field champion up north whose owner has stiffed quite a few people over the last couple of years on papers. One guy that regularly posts on this board to the tune of $1200 for 3 pups that he eventually gave away or sold dirt cheap as grade dogs. There is no excuse for a breeder not having the papers back on pups before they are sold. I have registered a litter and 4 other dogs in the last 3 - 4 months and none of them took over 2 weeks. Here is the rule no papers no money, don't trust anyone. It is sad but true, but it is better to be safe than sorry. Every dog that I have ever sold came with the papers in hand. I bought one who didn't come with his papers and had to go through hell and high water to get them. It took me almost 6 months after I got the dog to finally get the papers and that was after someone else actually went to the guys house and basically refused to leave without his and my papers. I have no desire to go through that type of drama again.

I think i remember when your dog was for sale .the guys phone was not working then and he was hard to reach their were other people on the network who knew him as one fellow said the dog ran quite well but this guy wanted to get into large pack.I suspect he is just screwed up and with a bit of effort and patience you can get them. Not that you should have to do that .Glad you beat me out on that deal!!!good luck

I have went through this before,Specificly with the breeder that bigdog is talking about. It is quite frustrating.
When you buy an AKC dog you are in fact buying the papers too.David(BeagleNut) runs AKC and will not be able to trial or breed this dog without the paperwork being in order.Unfortunately we live in a time of buyer beware.Peoples word doesnt mean what it used to.I would still buy a dog and wait for papers from a few people but they are ones I know well or have reputations of being straight shooters.
