Chapkos,

I have seen and have had few that claim a check with a bawl then go to a chop. I have always compared this to a coonhound or any type of hound that "locates" the game in question and then changes to a track mouth or tree mouth with tree hounds. I had a big male that would claim a check like he was locating a tree then go into a machine gun chop upon moving out on it. He was fun to listen to running a rabbit!! Just my theory on the different mouth a hound uses.

Everyone likes something different. I have one of each. My big nosed ball mouth 13 1/4" bluetick withgears and line control that just keeps getting better with age, and a 16" long legged hot nosed chop mouth tri. The chop mouth has hare hound breeding and is super fast with pretty darn good line control. When they are running together the bluetick bawls far less than when she solos just to keep up with the tri. You can tell she's taking several strides between bawls. But they both stay on the rabbit. When they come to a check they both seem to shut up at the same time, and I like the way they sound together. So I think I'll keep both :)

The negatives, because neither are without flaws, are that the bluetick, be it less and less with age, will still over run the line at times. The tri is still young and excitable. When another dog expodes out of a check and she is say 5'-10' away she will get excited and chop all the way to the point the other dog picked up the rabbit. I epect this to get less and less with age as well.

Anybody Ever had this happen or Was it just My LUCK
At a Trial one Time Wont mention Where but was in UBGF had one picked up because of his big ol bawl mouth..
Said he (Runner) kept losin Contact with the line Every time he would pick his head up to let out a big ol bawl they said he would loose contact with the line and that caused him to over run it...Now i have seen him do it but always snaps Right back to it..
Me Myself i LOVE that big ol Coon Dog Bawl of his and when he bawls you Know he has it...Aint Nuthin Like it on a cool clear frosty mornin listening to his voice Echo off the hollers. Have had fellas Stop on the road and just Listen to him go..
Now as far as being Faster i dont think So. I have a few that have it and the Chop Mouthed Dogs seem faster on the line to me.
But then again All my bawl mouth Dogs have Much better (Bigger) Noses than the chopped mouth dogs do to...

Every bawl mouth dog i've owned or hunted with have been fast.Doubt the voice has anything to do with speed but it does make you wonder.

I have a chop mouth and a bawl mouth. My chop mouth is tight mouthed, and my bawl mouth is loose mouthed/cold nosed. Is this always the case? Is a bawl mouth generally loose mouthed and cold nosed? If so then just knowing this about a dog could give a good idea if a certain dog is what you are looking for. :?:

5 of my dogs are chop mouths and their my most reliable,My bawl mouth dog will let out a bawl from the bottom of his gut but he will always overstep the track or be a little cold nosed.

Alabama, takes a man with a little gray in his hair to appreciate what you are saying. You know what, modesty aside, I bet you have some pretty darn fast chop mouth dogs. Wish I could see em.

While I don't believe it makes any difference, all of my fast dogs were chop mouth. I think it was coincidence because a close friend had a dog that had a beautiful deep bawl that would run circles around my "fast" chop mouthed dogs.

Bucks,
You can. Especially after the first of the year. Others have come down and we enjoyed ourselves. No competetion, just houndsmen having a good time listening.

I understand we all differ on some of this discussion and I also think it is in regard to the type hound we run.
Like TC said, a bawl mouth may be a faster in track running foot speed in UBGF or slower foot speed dogs.
I have seen chop mouths that baked 50 times a minute and moved 5 feet during that time in Brace Beagles.

What I was comparing to is dogs that are running faster than any human could possibly run behind them.
A dog running that speed goes a long way while bawling and not scenting.

BC,

Yes, I do believe a chop or squeal mouth will change directions as the rabbit does, staying on the track better.

I don't believe mouth effects speed of a dog. I like both types. As someone said earlier a chop will sound like they are doin more than they are. I personally like it, but a bawl is able to put distance between himself and other dogs because of his mouth and I like that too. Reason, I believe, is because a chop mouth dog sounds like he's doin more it convinces other dogs and they know exactly where he's at and they pull up. A bawl mouth can cover a lot of ground befor the dogs pull up. Jmo.

I believe it is "nose speed" and not "tongue speed" that moves the track. Some fast tonguers make much ado over nothing and keep double clutching on the same track before moving. I like a smooth gallop with that ah-rooo going over the hill, nostrils full of scent...

Hello All,
In my opinion,
Bawl, Chop or Squawl, mouth has NO barring on speed.
Running style is bred into our hounds. That's how the "Brace" hounds became in existance. They enjoy just the tracking, and will blow the hole into the ground and then take a step. (Some with Bawl and Trigger Mouths) They are not bred to catch.

As an example,
Bassets are normally slow, however the Field Hunting Bassets, are by far faster. Developed by the current breeders.

If a hound is bred to catch,it adapts regardless of voice. " When you have a fast engine, what the horn sounds like, make no difference."

I have a question about breeding a bawl mouth dog. Is any one bark dominate over the other when you breed like a chop to a bawl or a squaul to a bawl ?
