Raw chicken
If I was to go to the store to buy raw chicken to feed to my dogs. What should I be looking to get?

The cheapest you can find. I once worked for a wealthy gentleman in Ga. that had close to 300 fox hounds. He had raw chicken from a processing plant bring in cases of necks and wings as they were the cheapest parts of the chicken. We would feed the chicken mixed with kibbles and sometimes if some needed extra weight on them they would get just raw chicken.

Re: Raw chicken
I went to the local Kroger last year to pick up some raw chicken necks for the dogs. The guy said they were $1.69 lb. I kinda cringed at the price and he said why don't you buy whole chickens they're 88 cents a lb. Needless to say I bought the whole chickens.
Re: Raw chicken
I buy chicken breasts and market ham from the local store at least two times a week. Cut the breasts up into small chuncks
and feed it. The market ham is alresdy in small cuts. They love it and gives them a variety mix with their reg food.

The Raw Bones are soft and flexible Easy to digest it is only after they are cooked that they become brittle enough to Splintermn_beagleboy wrote:What about the small bones on the wing or the bones at the neck?
neck and backs are the best as the bones are much more flexible...The Dogs Go NUTS for em. Good For their Teeth and Gums as well....
From Field to Show and Show to Field the way it should be
Re: Raw chicken
so i can just go to the local BIG CHAIN grocery store and pick up chicken necks?
As some of you can tell i don't do shopping....

Re: Raw chicken
packages of chicken necks alone will probably be hard to find in a big grocery store as it isn't one of the top chicken parts to be sold. You would be better off looking for chicken backs or even leg quaters that are often on sale. The leg quarters have larger bones in them but they are easier to find in large packages and on sale than most anything else. The wings used to be cheap as well but since the buffalo wing craze they are a higher priced hot item as well. I used to feed chicken livers and gizzards too but I found out that I like them too much to feed them to the dogs!

Re: Raw chicken
i buy raw chicken and grill it, put barbecue sauce on it and feed it to myself!
Re: Raw chicken
picked up a 10lb bag of Leg quarters for $8bucks and some change. got one of my big males chewing on one right now. Big ol leg
Re: Raw chicken
Keep your eyes open for those leg quaters as they go on sale quite frequently. They usually have broken bones in them when on sale but that don't bother the dogs eating them nor does it me.
Re: Raw chicken
walmart 10 lbs. leg quarters for about $5.50
Re: Raw chicken
we've got a walmart supercenter. Great idea i'll have to check out the meat section see what they got.
Anyone have Save-A-Lot store in their local area? I'm going to see what they have too.
Boy he looked at that giant chicken leg a couple times sniffed it licked it a few times looked at me like what the heck is that thing then he dove right in finished it off. took him a bit to munch on the thing.

Re: Raw chicken
I've got a friend that raises great Danes and all he feeds are chicken necks. Joey I'll call him today and see where he gets it. We may have an advantage since there is a Tyson plant in town. Also, walmart chicken wouldn't b my first choice because they add up to 12% water/salt solution to the meat so it weighs more. May not bevthat big of deal but worth looking into when you're comparing prices
