Re: What's Trails Producing?
I really wasnt being sarcastic when I posted that, I dont know jack about Trails first hand- I actually thought the big average dogs thing before the question was asked. If he is producing just good old gundogs with some regularity thats perfect in my eyes, using the trialing abilities of pups as a guage for the producing power of a stud is for beaglers who are out of touch with reality. Re: What's Trails Producing?
I have a male out of trails and star that's a nice young dog. Size 14 1/2, good speed, and line control, good checking ability but my favorite thing is his hunt. He's a hunting machine. Worst thing is handling. He's around a 6 out if 10 on handling, he's not to bad. He is a good gundog to

I wonder if we could get other people with studs to ask this type of question. I like to try the flavor of the month and could use feed back before buying.

Re: What's Trails Producing?
Who wouldn't want a hound with speed, line control, close check work, hunt, nose and size? These are all positive attributes, has he thrown anything that people wouldn't like?
Re: What's Trails Producing?
I have trained are owned close to 10 Trails dog. I can tell you the good and bad and most of it is good. Trails dogs are very powerful with most having good hunt. What I like the best is how easy they are to start. Most of the males seem to have that big booming mouth. I was also a big believer in Trails Dad Gator. I can tell you people who do not know about Trails or have not seen his pups run you need to get one and see for yourself the power these dogs have. No bottom end to these dogs. Speed is usually med fast to fast, with excellent line control. The only negative I have seen in some of the females is not enough mouth. So if you have a tight mouth female you want bred to trails I think you should think about it first. I know Trails would be one of my first picks for a stud dog if you want good rabbit dogs. HIs pups will run every day as long as you want to run them. I have told you everything I know or seen in the Trails dogs that I have run. What I like the most about Steve is he will not breed Trails to just anything. MOst all the bitches bred to Trails are good dogs and most holding some type of title to their name.
Re: What's Trails Producing?
Lab couldent say it better. ive seen over 10 diffrent trails dogs run and 8 of them out of the same litter and that litter held the exceptional ones and they can all work the hell out of a check with diffrent styles so id say its all in what you breed trails to he will throw what he has in him that for sure he will give you some size and big mouths speed in the litter i raised all were pure rabbit dogs that will hunt all day and have very good line control. the bitch i bred to trails is a little tight mouth and does not buy into faulty mouthd hounds so the pups are a little tight on a sneaky doe rabbit just saves them a minus. 3 of the trails dogs ive observed had break away speed that most dogs can not take the front from.

Re: What's Trails Producing?
If someone else came on her and asked what is trails producing. There would be few replys and even fewer would say anything negative. Steve I really like the fact you came on here and asked this question, especially specifically asking people to state the negatives.Kudus to you.

Re: What's Trails Producing?
I have only ever seen one Trails dog run, Oak Ridge Denali Rebel. He is simply an outstanding dog in every way, close, clean and fast, a full size 15", And one of the most beautful big males you'll ever see. He is a hunters dream, but for some reason he got burned out on the trial scene, otherwise he was sure to be a FC. If I had a pen full of dogs like him I would be thrilled.
I also had the chance to see Trails run, both in trials and under the gun. I was impressed with him in both settings, and thought he was an even better gun dog, than trial dog which holds more weight with me. Trails does great in deep snow and cold, and literally, handles like a bird dog. I watched Mike Corrigan call him off a hot hare on more than one occassion. Trails possesses that extreme level headedness and intelligence that alot of the Pacesetter dogs possess. I don't know exactly where it comes from, but those of you who have seen alot of the Pacesetter stuff know what I am talking about. They are very, very intelligent dogs with alot of maturity at a young age. Trails was / is a Prime example of that. I would love to have a Trails pup in the pen. Those of you who do not have some Trails stuff and are into 15" / Pacesetter stuff are missing out.
I had the chance to see Gator run a few times in trials. To be honest, the few times I saw him I wasn't impressed. I didn't see any faults in him, although I heard he could go backwards once in awhile, "never saw him do it myself." Even though he was an IFC, I thought he was at best, "average" in ability and he was badly cow hocked. Not a dog I would have bred to. That being said, he was certainly a prepotent stud, and produced, very, very well, with what would seem, few breedings. I did judge Gator's brother once in Canada. He was a dog owned by John Dewyse, who's name I don't recall. He was a real nice dog, built well too. He earned first place the day I judged him and would have finished IFC, but as I understand, was killed on the road.
I guess what I'm saying....Trails is the real deal, as is his owner, if your thinking of breeding to him....do it!!!
