Young Rabbit Races

Got a question for some of you veteran rabbit huters. Why is it harder for dogs to run young rabbits. I'm talking really small rabbits, but weaned. Had somebody tell me because they are like a deer fawn when they are little and they don't have scent to protect them from predators. True or False. Reason I am asking is that we turn loose on a young rabbit this morning and the dogs couldn't run it but about 15 yards then could not smell it anymore. I mean we wrere lookign at the rabbit when we turned loose.The conditions were moisture on the ground from a heaby dew this morning and about 43 degrees. Now they run some adult rabbits until they holed up really good this morning.

I read an artical on that and it said they were born with no scent alot like other animals in the wild, I am not sure how long , But the same thing happened to me a few times this year with good dogs and not just my own dogs either!

I think we "stink" because we sweat, animals don't sweat. Their scent comes from oil glands that develop and emit oils to be spread along the head, feet and rump. I think it is Natures design that these glands and their oil secretion develop slowly and as they mature, so the young of the species have a fighting chance at survival. jmho

Tellico, Bo, SR, Ithink you all are correct. I have watched the same thing happen again and again,with each litter taht is born. JMO

i've been seeing way to many very young rabbits these past couple rabbit hunts. this year they had lots of late breeding season litter's

If ya don`t line that tailgate with so many bunnies this year you`ll have a good reproduction crop for next year.

rabbits have a short life span, studies show that hunting has little effect on populations, So Joey Take heed of what troy says on swamp man, shoot-em shoot-em he gonna get away. Good luck this year guys, take a youth or a older person enjoy and be safe. Got to wait till turkey day to hunt the bunnies.
