Feeding Beagles

Post by beagletrainer »

I was wondering if any one feed meat to there Beagles? I have a friend thats the maniger at a store and he said if i want he can save the chicken and pork and beef thats out dated that they throw away in the trash for me for the dogs. What i was wandering is if i cook it and feed with my other dog food would it be good for the dogs or not? He said theres nothing rong with it just out dated they can`t sale it in the store after the do date. Oh and in deer season does any one feed there scrapes off thier deer to there beagles? I throw mine in the trash but if its not going to heart my dogs i can cook it and feed.

I feed raw meat most of the time. Its healthier than dog food, more nutritious, and the dogs like it better. Its better for them raw than cooked. I would be very cautious feeding pork, especially pork thats been sitting a long time. Beef and chicken would be better choices. I sure wish I had that situation. I pay $1.59 lb for beef scraps here. One of the places I was getting it, the chain manager decided they couldnt sell it anymore.

The days of the local meat market are about gone. Big chain stores are taking over. I say enjoy that benefit while it lasts. If its a consistent steady supply you wont need to buy dog food.

I am interested in hearing responses on the question of feeding a beagle venison. Any comments on that?

I think if skint out and cleaned, the scent a hound runs is totally different than the flavour he may enjoy from the meat he eats, but then again... them pork chops may be why my hounds so enjoyed running them wild pigs down in La.... ... hummmm :bash:

I basically feed any and all scraps from the deer we harvest. About sixty a year and it saves a Pile of $ off your feed bill. I feed it raw and the hounds love it and do very well on it. I'll feed raw for two days and one day kibbles.

thanks for the comments guys

I was curious if it affects "deer proofing" them, but I guess not. I would say I have had about 5 serious deer chases in the last 4 years. It is not a big problem but when it has happened I hate it, and I still watch them closely in areas where I know there are lots of deer.I am still a little leery on feeding it to them though for this reason. It seems mine went on a deer chase when there were not many rabbits but lots of deer. I try to avoid these areas. I have staged a few deer chases and when twice they bit on it, I let them have it with the shock collar. The last time I tried this they ran right over the deer tacks and left it alone.

I have at least one deer a year processed just for my hounds. I have them grind the whole thing to burger and pack it in big packs so I can feed all of them. I feed them this in winter and when they are getting run hard and they look like body builders with the lean muscle they put on! I feed it as well for a couple days then back to kibble. I have heard it is not as beneficial to mix raw and kibble because they process it differently?
