Female.I believe it is much harder to locate,own,get bred and raise a quality litter from an outstanding female than it is to do the same with the males.Outstanding males are much more easily identified and located through stud adds, trial winnings,reputation and general over-all exposure to the public than most females.As Maple Valley stated"Give me a great bitch and I will find a great male to cross her with".
IF YOU WANT TO BREED AND YOU'VE GOT THE ITCH,JUST REMEMBER IT STARTS WITH THE BITCH !

IMO females are alot easier to train and seem to be smarter im not saying males arent smart but a good female is easier to come by than males and size its hard for me to find the type of male i run and be small they are always big males and last reason i like females is they come in 1 time a year males are in 365 days a year.I have owned 3 males in 30 years and own 1 of them now that i would feed But i am a very tough culler any hound on my place to stay has to be as close to perfect you have ever seen are they dont stay not bragging just picky i have seen what males and females i have clled win trials

I would have a great Female any day but like others have said mother nature plays a roll into field trialing I should know all to well with my Evans Lady in Red as she went into heat and started dripping in the finals at a Big 5 when I first got started so she got scratched GRRRRRR LOL but that is what you chance when running Females.

I do have a nice Male out of her right now that I will feed until the day he dies not for sale or trade I will be breaking him out this year !

I`ve got both and still think the female is more important than the male. Way to much emphasis is being put on the feild trial aspect and not enough being put on just every day running hounds. J M H Opinionated opinion. I haven`t been breeding hounds very long so I could be mistaken.

I'm still gonna hold my ground. You can't beat a good male on the ground. its something special just can't explain it. when you got a good male he goes down on the ground first and straight up gets it done. nothing like it.

don't get me wrong females play a key role but the males get it done like no other. if you get a nice one he'll be the kennel stud as well as your go to dog when its time to throw down against your buddies.

I love this post and being a young houndsman I must say I would rather have a great male.The reason is very simple as you can see they are few and far between.Just think Reggie was bred over 200 times if I'm correct,If there were so many great males to breed to that wouldn't happen.If you have a truly great male like Reggie or Junie you are talking about a once and a life time hound.It's funny that everyone says you can always find a great male to breed to but where is he at because everyone on this post is running females.Give me a truly great Male and you put yourself in elite company.Lol!!

I totally agree they are few and hard to find you can find a bunch that will run and join in the race but very few that has the total package thats why i just own 1 and he is the 1 of the 3 i have ever seen includin videos that is a top notch

I think we have stud dog that have accomplished great things but may not be great fathers..best example in horses look at Secretariat...just a select few really put themselves on the ground ..i think most of the time pups take after the mom. so..get a really good mom...that simple..some studs however pup will look like dad if bred to a monkey...just a little exageration.....ill go with what JA said,,,I would like to have had Blue Iris.
