winding the rabbit.
I think its really cool to see bird dogs go on point while sprinting around. Never thought I would have a dog to do it, but he is starting to do this on many different times during running time. So do any of you beaglers jave those beagles that can wind a rabbit, what is their pedigree like?

Re: winding the rabbit.
I dont know his pedigree and I dont own him but a good friend of mine that I run with a lot has a big male that will wind a rabbit and yes I agree its pretty neat to watch him do that.

Re: winding the rabbit.
I have dogs that hunt on the run and wind a rabbit whip around, and have a rabbit going just from winding it. I have seen my male catch rabbits that he has winded that sat to long. They go back to some gay breeding that I have had for a while, with a few other crosses.

Re: winding the rabbit.
I had one that hunted like that. I have had some very "busy" dogs that could not match him at producing a rabbit. The casual observer might say he was "briar shy". He liked taking the easier paths when hunting and would circle down wind of promising spots. When you saw him DIVE into a thick spot, you could count on a rabbit coming out! He obviously had a good nose and ran mostly "head up" unless scenting was really poor. He was a grade beagle so I am unsure of his bloodline. The guy I got him from told me that his sire was an "Alabama State Champion" but he was not a trialer. I don't think the guy really knew much other his sire than the sales pitch he saw in the stud ad. I gradually phased out his descendents in my kennel and went 100% AKC. Sometimes I wish I still had beagles from that line.

I have 2 15 month dogs out of Greenbay Shooter and I have seen them both wind a rabbit and go in the brush or weeds and jump the rabbit. It is fun to watch.

Re: winding the rabbit.
I've got one Patch female out of Plowboys Bossman x Plowboys Double Dot that I call Blondie that hunts on the run and just about anytime you see her stop and throw her head up and then start either pouncing through the thick stuff watching or bust into a brushpile or fence roll you know she has locked on one. I sure miss her when she is layed up in heat or with pups. My other hounds all do well about jumping their own rabbit but Blondie sure makes it look easier and seems to get one rolling quicker.

Re: winding the rabbit.
I have a female off of Big Tuna that jumps a lot of rabbits by winding them. The other night she winded one, solo, went about 30 yards, jumped it and ran it for 30 minutes about as hard as any hound could. I was impressed by it. it is fun to watch a hound circle and work the wind. Takes an above average nose and some brains.

Re: winding the rabbit.
I just took it for granted all hounds did this. Mine will be hunting along when a cross wind carrying rabbit scent will hit their noses. They'll stop, scan the air, and follow their noses to the source. But then again, they'll do this if there is something dead to roll in or something good to eat putting out the odor as well. Naturally damp windy days are better for this than calm dry hot days.

Re: winding the rabbit.
I have a male that has winded many a Hare while walking on a leash on are way to hunt. At first I thought he was crazy so i cut him loose and sure enough he jumped the rabbit. Now when he starts acting up and barking i just let him go.
