get a horn instead,it will carry alot further then a whistle, and dont use the tt trying to get them to come to it ,theyll end up running from it,i use mine when i call them in and when i tally ho them,3 time when calling them in,a bunch of fast tutes when i tally ho,,,,when you feed them tute it as if your calling them,it dont take long for them to learn what you want them to do,,give norwester a shout and get some info from him ;)

I started using my whistle when they are a little tired and ready to go and reenforce it with the tone from the tri-tronics. Later when they are coming good I'll start breaking them off chases. Now when I blow it one time the running stops and they meet me at the truck. The way it got explained to me from a very good fox hunter was blow the whistle one time and press the button, I asked how many times to blow it before shocking them and he said once is enough.

stand in front of them blow whistel give treat. do that 5 or 6 times then let them wonder 10 foot from ya blow whistel they will come give treat .
they get the ideal real fast. in a few days after they have this.
you can start the hotdog game of looky here. then down the road change from hotdogs to rabbit tracks.

I trained mine to a whislte... like recommended by the other responses... while feeding, use the whistle... does not take
long to associate. I know have a Keets hron... like ot MUCH better. Yes the sound does carry further and the hounds seem
to respond to it better (jmo).

I will say that when I put Twister in his first field trial and we were instructed to handle the hounds... all the handlers started
hollering like they were mad at their hound... Twister went the opposite direstion as a result. I pulled out the Whistle and hit
it three times... he came and sat at my feet. The other handlers were somewhat amaized at that.

The bird dog guys use a whistle WITHOUT a pea in it.It gives you more control over the sounds you can make with a whistle.
I tally-ho my beagles to a hot track by blowing 3 short and sharp toots.I blow in the whistle and control the speed of the "toots" by capping the inlet with your tongue. This makes an excited sound they seem to respond to naturally. I have never ever ever ever lied to my dogs with this tally-ho whistle command, and they trust it "to a fault"( Some will open coming to me.)
To call my hounds in, i blow a longer tone cut of sharply at the end.
I started using a whistle at properties where i ran and hunted close to houses and farms. Sometimes when i would YELL for my dogs the old girl would poke her head out screen door to see what the yelling was all about.I found that the whistle didn't cause that reaction, with my close proximity land owners.

I have trained mine to come to a whistle. As with all training, beagles respond best to treats. I would call them and then blow the whistle and give them a treat. They got the idea in one short session.I use a plastic whistle without a pea so it will not freeze up inside (or on my mouth like in the Christmas Story). Most of the time I do not need it but I try to remember to use it to keep them responding to it well. I use it as more of a back up system to yelling or toning them when they are way out there but I think I will start using it more often. I only trained them to come to the whistle an not other comands from it. To get them on a rabbit I yell "here he is". I also only use this for rabbit and like you Ray S I have one that will sometimes bark on his way over to me. Fun Stuff. :)

I have used a brass military whistle for many years. Start by blowing it when you feed and they will assiciate that with something good. In no time they will get the idea to come to the whistle. I had a few dogs that I could call to me during a race if they broke down for a little while. It makes getting out of the woods easy.

Mine are trained to come to the tone button, but I use a whistle and my voice to let them know where I am.
