There's a sulfadine shampoo (has sulfur) good for the skinmites.

The old way was to soak the hound in burnt motor oil, modern oil don't seem to get sulfur from like the old engine oils.

Sulfur is good for the blood and skin ailments. Many skin problems are sickness from within working their way outward.

Ivomec will kill the mites but the underling problem is still there, the immunity to deal with the irritation from the mites and the infection they cause.

It's heartbreaking to have a hound that can't promote it's own health but weakness come to surface with each breeding.

To those who breed such hounds and the puppies come out fine, your only fooling yourselves, you've only covered up the problem for a while to be passed down to the next fellow.

When weaknesses come to surface, they should be scrutinized as debt, remembering the interest always comes due on the debt and too much debt can ruin your investment... ;)

I might be wrong but it looks to me that its just from beating the brush,briars and everything else.My big hounds look twice that bad everytimee I run them,some just show it more than others,especially a white chested and head dog.I suppose you could put something on it but it will clear up in a couple days.Just irratated skin but thats going to happen if you have a strong running hound unless you are running in open woods.

Just an explanation!

The burnt motor oil has a acid, the more burnt the more acid so the more miles before an oil change the stronger the acid. The acid kills the mange or what's infected and the sulpher held in place by the other properties of the oil healed the sore left after the acid did its killing. That's why it works so well. There's medical reasoning behind these old remedies!

Same with an infected sore. Sulpher will heal it. Man or any animal, olden times or today, doesn't matter.

Smelled the medicine I ordered from the folks in Alaska. It works good, but I let my family smell it and we all got a kick out of it because you can sure smell the old remedies in it. It has a strong healing sulpher smell.

I think that is Why the nu-Stock Works so well..

Sulfur==========73 %
Mineral Oil =====25%
Pine Oil=========2%
I Can remember Dad mixing pine tar and Sulfer for the critters with ailments and sores to the skin
I Have found that adding just a little mineral oil to it to make it runnier, Seems to help hold it in better..
Just make sure to Wear your Rubber gloves....
Either way wound or mange it Will help......
Good luck Wit6h gettin it cured up Joey

I think you can go a lifetime an not experience red mange. I have never had a dog with it but a friend that has had a lot of dogs has had it on one. I could be wrong but it sure looks like the start . I hope im wrong ...Sounds like your doing all ya can. He did the Ivomec took forever but it worked.

Posting this thursday 8/12/2010

I've been watching him everyday. The sores as of last night have No more red at all to it. Looks dark colored now. No swelling at all. Paws look normal cept for the darkness where the red once was. Chest area just looks like thin hair and you can see his skin. The skin has no scabs. Nothing visible wrong with his skin. The arm pit area is just skin very thin hair. No scabes just bare skin with little hair. Arm pit bareness is just very small area under his armpit.

I don't know what a red mange filled dog looks like. never had one. if i were to guess i think it would be a continuos redness scabe like symptoms. which he does not have.

it all is cleared up now cept for the thinnish hair and the bright redness on his paws are now dark colored. If I were to run him again it will most likely turn bright red again and a little puffy at the paws just like before.

All I can do at this point is continue the Ivomec and fish oil pills. I want to shampoo him one more time with malaseb shampoo that I have which treats dermatitis in dogs.

it may be from the running in the thick green dew filled grass. he runs thru thick grass mostly i guess it tall weeds/grass. we have briars but not heavy briars. maybe his young sensitive coat/skin don't agree running in that type of cover.

bottom line if this continue's i will take him to the vet for a skin scrape but I'll bring him when he has that redness on his paws so they can see it. Thing is vets around here mess with foo foo dogs and the little old lady next door's cat.... and not gun-dogs. I feel like I get ripped off everytime i go to a city vet.

From what I gather I would also try this too............it can't hurt. Anything to help speed up the process. JMO

Also, I know you don't want to lay him up but maybe just 1 or 2 very, very short trips for him per week until the hair fills back in. I tend to look at it like any other injury........give it time to properly heal and you'll be back up and running at 100%........push it too soon and it can get drug out for a longer period of time plus you'll probably still end up having to lay him up to get it to completely heal down the road anyway........again JMO.

I agree Bunnyblaster he needs layed up. his coat needs to thicken up. maybe these very hot nasty days we've been having he has shed lots of hair. I don't know. He come from michigian he's a hare bred dog he may be better off in the cooler temps. i don't know anything about that, thats a whole nother topic right there. he's my first dog that actually came from up north sent down to me from harebred dogs. again that could mean nothing I'm not sure.

maybe once that coat thickens up he'll be fine. I bet come winter he'll look good and thick.

they use to carry that at wal-mart don't know if they still do. it is a gold colored liquid for hot-spot treatment. I've bought it before at wal-mart. I know pet-co carries it.

If you want confirmation from a vet just ask for the skin scraping I am pretty sure they will confirm the red mange! I think you have enough info from this board to help clear it up! Good luck Joeyman. Vets will suggest a dip. It will make the sick and lithargic you want to avoid that if at all possible it will take alot out of the dog!! Ivomec,fish oil, and nu-stock. it may take time but the case does not look bad "yet". I think you have caught it early enough to squash it before it becomes a real problem..
