Had one do the exact same thing a couple years ago. It started on his toes, they were really red and swollen and the hair was really thin. It then started up his legs and and onto his chest. Hair was really thin and crusty sores would form after he was ran. I think it was some sort of infection, maybe caused by an underlying problem like dew poisoning or a form of mange.
I used a shot of 3cc penicillin every other day for a week or so and layed him up. After about a week the redness went away but it took about a month for the hair to come back. If you don't lay him up until his hair comes back I think the problem will persist.I battled this problem for several months, every time it got to looking better I would run him and the problem would come right back. If you want to have him ready for the season this fall I would get him healed up now.

i really hate to lay him up. i actually wanted to dump him in a 40ac running pen for a month of abuse. i don't see that happening now.

i think it has to do with the dew on the grass. his skin isn't like that so well. what do you guys think?

he really hates a rabbit and is showing me good things I hate to lay him up at this point in his age.

I had a dog with the same problem. Everytime the redness went away and it started to look better I wuold try to run the dog. It got worse everytime, more redness, more hair loss and it started getting crusty. I layed the dog up, gave it Ivermectin 1/10 cc per 10 pounds of dogs weight every day for 30 days. Hair started to grow back in two weeks but the dog was not completely healed tel about day 30. I would lay the dog up. I know you probably don't want to here that but that is my opinion...DH

I would do what deerhost said, it looks alot like RED MANGE . I would think it would hurt briars hitting bare skin. A good friend doctored this for about a year finally healed but took forever. Rather doctor it for that sure wouldnt hurt.

Joey,
Your right it's alot of Ivomec, but I can tell you this thats the dose for the treatment. I have known many beagles given that doseage and never seen one have a problem from it. But you have to be patient if you just get it starting to look good and take him out you'll be back to square 1.......

Of course ya could have a vet do a scrape before doing anything, thats probably what I would do just for peace of mind.

yeah I could do that too. I hate the vet's office around here though.

and also I'm not liking the laying up part very much. I just had him going good too.

Hey Joey, looks like it could be mange, there are two types of mange, sarcoptic and demodeptic, not sure but I think he only has a mild case, under the arm pit is a popular place they loose hair from mange because of the constant rubbing. They sell a shampoo for mange, believe has tar in it and and does he seem to itch, cause benadryl would help if he does. If continues, I would lay him up for a week or two, good luck.
All dogs have mange, some dont ever have the rash, but sometimes stress brings it out.
Another thing I was thinking, have you changed his dog food? I have seen dogs with food allergies loose hair, like mange too.
If you did change his food, look into what ingredients are, and change back or feed something else.

Joey,

In my humble opinion its an allergy rash and some high bred dogs are bad to get it.
I would put some burnt motor oil and sulphur on it, rub in good and keep running. Put it on after each run.

Just read Anthonys post as we posted about the same time. He's right about the feed. especially if you are feeding a high protein in this heat. 21% should be as high a protein you should feed now.

i have the malaseb shampoo and malaseb in a spray. I will shampoo him tomorrow. His feed is yellowbag Blackgold. he's been on it for a good while now. going to switch him to black back in october.

the redness flares up after a morning run in the wet dew filled grass.
