The old boy is to tired!
Hi all,
I was wondering what you all do with the old dog that doesn't run anymore. I have 1 that can only go about an hour before he's to tired, and 1 That doesn't even show interest in rabbits. My other 2 are awsome and i'd like to build a pack but my wife says no more until the other 2 are gone. What to do? I need to make a decision soon so I can have a pup ready to go out by next season.
Thanks,

Get rid of her (wife) and get as many dogs as you want whenever you want. Problem solved. I'll bet you'll never hear the dogs complain or giving you chores or telling a man what he can or can not do.jonnyboyer wrote:Hi all,

Re: The old boy is to tired!
What would you do with a cow that couldn't give milk anymore? A chicken that quit laying? A plow mule that got crippled?
All these would of had the best of care and been enjoyed by all in the household but animals are just that, animals.
Not to be mistreated at all, but must earn their keep or be gone.
Not talking about people not being able to work, that is entirely a different story!!!

I would have to say, if they were brought up here did their job, which is run rabbits until they were bloody and wore out at the end of the day for what they get paid. I say they stay here untill they past on, they can lay in the sun when its warm and I will supply a warm shelter in the winter. The meals and Meds included. Not giving a hound its due in the end is no respect.

Re: The old boy is to tired!
I have a female that is coming 11 years old. She has cancer and is blind in one eye, doesn't run anymore as she cannot smell the track very well. I have owned this Lady for some 9 plus years and together, we have had many, many days afield running and gunning rabbits. This, not to mention the numerous pups and young dogs that she helped to become fairly good hounds. She doesn't hit the fence to greet me when I go to the kennel any more, in fact, often she will not even come out of her house unless called. Her teeth are about gone so she must have special feed, but that is fine with me, she has earned it. She is a part of the family and due the care and respect given to a human member. She will live out her days here and needless to say, it will be a sad day when I call to her and find that her only need is a pleasant place of burial.
Re: The old boy is to tired!
If I raise a dog and it puts itself through years of bloody ears and tails I would never get rid of that dog I can't imagine turning my back on something that has basically devoted it's entire life to making me happy.
If I were you I would pull on her heart strings a little explain the old dogs don't have much time left and then take her somewhere and accidentally end up at someones house who has little pups who can resist a beagle pup.

I have 2 now, 12 and 13 years old-they have room and board paid in full till they die. Sure could use those 2 kennels but this is one time I will work around the dogs schedule.

Re: The old boy is to tired!
To compare a cow or chicken to a loyal hunting companion is ludicrous. That old beagle has devoted his life to pleasing his master and hunting companion and to discard him after many years of faithful service is cruel. My dogs will live out their lives at my place when they can no longer hunt. They earned that right. And when the time comes when their quality of life is such that they are no longer able, then they will be humanely taken care of and will be buried "at home".

I have one that is 12 he spends his days doing as he pleases ;running or laying in the shade all the feed he wants. Had a lot of great hunts together. Can't imagine getting rid of him.

Thanks all, Looks like the general concensus is about the same, guess i'll have to get rid of the wife!
Aw, can't do that who would feed the dogs. Just kidding, I'll keep working on her and try to get her to see the importance of new blood in the pack. Thanks again for the replys.

Um, human beings are "just animals" too. The truth is, man (in all his worldly advance) is merely an upright-walking mammal, wearing pants.
That being said, we humans tend to place different values on different animals, precisely in relation to how close a given animal can bond with us (or how far they are from the capacity or ability to bond with us). I mean, who can get close to a chicken or a worm? These lower animals have no emotions and they do not avidly work with us, relate to us, or try to please us---thus most people don't place a great deal of value on them as individuals. In fact, the only value of many farm animals have is that of food. Thus the death and our eating such animals is the entire reason we keep many of them at all. We farm them like crops.
A good dog, however, is a different story. In our culture, dogs are not food animals, they become our companions and helpers precisely because they have the capacity to relate to us on many different levels. Dogs have a wide variety of emotions and they avidly try to please us in many different ways. Dogs try their best to do our bidding, they greet us with cheer, and they place so much value on us in return that they will defend us and our family from harm. Many dogs have actually pulled family members from buring homes or barked and barked until help came to save an unconscious loved one. What mule or chicken would do this? Therefore, a good dog does more than "earn his keep" as a dumb animal, a good dog truly is a valuable friend, companion, and protector.
Therefore, IMO, any man who would just use a dog up for all it's worth ... and who cannot understand that even the best of dogs grow old and wear out ... and who would thereby refuse to make his elder dog's life happy and comfortable and allow him live out his last days in peace ... but who would instead prefer to just kill it and not be bothered with it anymore ... is a totally selfish and insensitive person, and is not the type I would want to have as a friend.

Jack,
You proved yourself to me to be an all knowing, smarter than any of us long ago so I sure don't count you as a friend!

Re: The old boy is to tired!
jonny go get another pup, bring it home when your wife is there, walk in hand her the pup and tell her you have something to do,spent about an hour fiddling around then come back in the house to find out that her pup will be welcome. beagle pups pull heart strings.
