Complete Package
What dog or dogs would you say have it all. Brains, foot speed, nose, etc. Not just a dog that is good, but a dog that shines in the field almost 100% of the time.
Re: Complete Package
Several here from my kennel , but I'll say my Ruby bitch & then Cuz's Bossman male . My male Dobie was coming on really good considering on what he was , a yot hound , but he twisted his gut almost 3 yrs ago and has not been run much since , he was really just going to be use as a stud in my breeding program anyways. He's a full littermate to Plowboys Bossman . Good Patch breeding , the best IMO . I don't think you will find hounds with more hunt , foot , brains & conformation.

my dog of course
i really think it depends on who is watching the dog run and what their personal likes and dislikes are. are you looking for a dog or a bloodline?

Re: Complete Package
I think there are some good dogs out there that are “obvious” because of there trialing record and reputation. But I also know that there are some good dogs that are overlooked simply because of lack of exposure because they don’t get trialed. I know everybody has there favorites but I can honestly say that I have seen run and gun hunted with Jim Lane’s dogs and I have never, and I mean never, seen his Dingus dog have a “bad” day, I mean on his bad days he is still good and I have seen him on days where he was absolutely untouchable by any other dog in the field. Foot, line, nose, correct mouth, hunt and most of all brains. When a rabbit is shot he retrieves the rabbits back to your feet and if other dogs run “off game”, Dingus checks in with you {tells on the other dogs} and than goes back out and jumps a rabbit. {Jim says Dingus picked that up from the “Ozzie” dog}
But he didn’t get him by accident, Jim has talked to me about evaluating the strengths and weaknesses, starting at the great great grand parents, all the way down to the dogs he may be breeding. And if he thinks they won’t “mesh” or compliment each other, he won’t breed them.
But some guys have a knack for that, or a gut feeling. Like Branko, Terry McBride… etc… and a “few” others… They just know dogs. I can’t really explain it, I just know they can, kind of like a Chef in a kitchen when it comes to “exact” ingredients in what they cook. For years Jim has taken some of the best from Larry Perry, Kenneth Hill, John Toy, Dan Kane, RB Sester and a few others, and is combining traits from different lines to make that complete dog, while somehow not including many of the negative traits from those same lines.
Another one is Mike Oszust of Alamo Creek Kennels, which is a good friend of Jim Lane. Alamo Creek are more of a “progressive pack” style, but well rounded and as complete as you can get. Laneline are Little or Large Pack style, but with “gears”.
Laneline and Alamo Creek put a lot of pups on the ground every year and have been doing so for years, and you rarely ever see any of them for sale or resale anywhere. There is a reason for that, they are keepers.
Work schedules and family commitments keep many from the trialing circuit, but go run with these guys, they welcome anybody to run with them at anytime. People can post and talk, but seeing the dogs run with your own eyes is really the only way to know for sure.

Well Dave, I guess kinda both. I'm a 16 yr old and I've only been into beagling for two yrs. I was talking to an old man once and he told me that he didn't like fast dogs because they over ran the checks alot and where rough. I've owned fast dogs since day one and I'm pretty satisfied, but I just wanted to see what bloodlines or dogs popped up in this conversation.

The best dog I have seen that didn't have any faults were IFC GreenBay Shooter. He's got ice cold water running through his veins, he's the best I've seen. Seen several young dogs out of him that are spectacular.

Re: Complete Package
all bout, welcome to the site. it is good to see a young guy into the sport and i am real happy you are on here getting some info. there are some real knowledgeable people on here. i take it you have branko bred dogs. it seems like you cant go wrong with them.
there are some dogs out there with some amazing pedigrees and some amazing trialing records but you need to watch them run for yourself and see if it fits what your wants are. i have a dog i see as a complete package. if i didnt i would not be able to run bunnies here consistently sod and snow. if you like faster hard hitting dogs then i highly suggest checking out patch breeding. they all are not for everyone though.

I'm not saying Shooter isn't a great hound...but that fact you said didnt he have any faults isn't true. There hasn't not nor will there ever be a dog without faults.Harner's Hounds wrote:The best dog I have seen that didn't have any faults were IFC GreenBay Shooter. Re: Complete Package
I agree on the no faults on any hound as they all have a hole or two be big or very small.
My thinking, for my hounds, is find the line of hounds that suit me and reproduce the same type of hounds consistantly with changes and variations being brought about by breeder trial and error. I, personally, like hounds based in Dingus Macrae for hunt, Perry's Pete for hunt, Ranger Dan for nose and hunt, Indian Hills for extra gears and hunt, and old branko for all of the above. JMO. I have had decent success in the short time I have been very serious about breeding and purchasing registered hounds. Reasearch what you want and try them out.
Last point I think is key. Start your kennel or line with the strongest FEMALES you can get!!! No, you can't tell if they will be reproducers until you breed them, but you start with solid ground. Best of to all!!!!

They all have a and or some faults , some maybe kennel blind to these , but they are there . You just have to decide what you are willing to live with . I know their are some very , very nice hounds out there but they got faults . ;-)
