Tattoo question???
I was wondering if anyone has used the Ketchum roll on tattoo ink before. It seems simple, but I was wondering if it is effective. It says to roll it on, use the tatoo pliers, then roll on again. Also at what age does everyone tattoo? Thanks

Re: Tattoo question???
Mike, the roll on will work but not near as good as the paste. In order to get a good job done you'll have to get those fingers dirty. Back when I was working with fox hounds we would do about 25 litters a years and would rub the ink in with a finger and always showed up well. You have to get the ink deep into the pin holes.
We did most pups at 7 to 8 weeks old.
Hope things are well down in Migetville. LOL

Re: Tattoo question???
Have you ever tried to tattoo a dog around 1 year old? I usually tattoo mine at an early age also but I have a young male that I want to tattoo and I was just wondering if any has any experience with older dogs.We did most pups at 7 to 8 weeks old.

Just do it like hounddog said and rub it in pretty good. You can get you some surgical gloves and use that to help keep it off your hands if you want to.

Are the pliers you use the same as the ones used to tattoo rabbit ears?
Can you buy personalized tattoo pliers?
Where do you get them at?

Re: Tattoo question???
Well always looking for an easy road. We have tattoed pups as early as 5 weeks and as late as 4 months (not to bad surprisingly). I just seen this roll on and thought it may be a easy way to go, but I also know easy ain't better. Appreciate the info. Jim, plenty of meat and taters on the table in midgetville. We are scrawney down here too. When u gonna make it down this way, I got a hankerin for some jump mountain juice

I can't blame a man for looking for the easy route.
Glad things are good down your way! Keep eating that meat and taters and maybe one day you guys will catch up with me!
I'll get down that way in the near future and share some the summer's harvest!

I don't know if they are the same ones that you tattoo rabbits with or not, I have never tattoed rabbits but I am sure you could with the ones that I have. You can buy tattoo pliers in Richmond, KY at the Tractor Supply Store for around $50.00 and they come with numbers 0--9 but if you want letters you have to order them separate and they also sell the ink.
Thanks Ark. I probably have to get someone to hold the older dogs for me. I always do the pups by myself because I do them while they are still young.by Ark on Tue Jun 29, 2010 3:06 pm

Re: Tattoo question???
I use to tattoo alot of hounds fo myself and others , I've got a nice set of pliers and 2 or 3 sets each of letters & numbers , think they are 5/16's in size . But since I started using micro-chips I don't use the tattoo set . The paste always worked best for me , but here's some tricks I learned , mostly for bigger ( older ) dogs , shave the area where placing the tattoo then clean ( scrubb ) clean with alcohol , it can be done alone but much easier with a helper. I prefer the green ink over the black , after stamping the ear with good pressure ( my set has a built in release ) not to over do the depth , apply plenty of ink and rub in with hand , then I'd take a tooth brush and rub it in also . All the excess will wear away in a few days or a week . Getting it into the holes is key .
