Re: Line Breeding ????
M&M I believe in linebreeding, I have been linebreeding my own line of dogs for over 20 years. Here is what I would say to you, search out the kind of dog you like and breed for that. Don't let anyone else sway you on what you want.
When you post a question on here you will get several different opinions but thats all they are as breeding has not been perfected by anyone. You breed what (YOU) like and hope the dogs you raise are similar to what you are breeding. Hopefully if your linebreeding program works you will over time see some consistencies across the dogs you raise.
As I said I believe in linebreeding because I have seen consistentcy across my dogs, what I like in a dog. Having said that the best rabbit dog (IMO) I ever seen was from a complete outcross. By the way she didn't belong to me, I hunted over her off and on her entire life and she is the only dog I have seen that was always the best dog on the ground no matter what else was down with her. You can get good dogs and bad ones either way, some crosses just dont work for whatever reason.

Re: Line Breeding ????
I am a fan of linebreeding but at times you will get the best and worst of that bloodline. I train and work Belgian Malinois (protection sports) and my top female is from a father/daughter breeding. I am new to the Beagle world so I am not sure if you guys have a website like this or not but below you will see the Beagle Pedigree Database. This is a website set up to store all of your pedigrees and help to see breeding checks. This website will show the litters linebreedings (if any) up to 5 gens.

Re: Line Breeding ????
Yes inbreeding is within the immediate family. Linebreeding is breeding outside of the immediate family but still related.
Jim Lane used to have this nice little thing on his website called "the ABC's of breeding" but the link no longer works. It was a nice apples and oranges textbook on basic genetics with a handy little chart showing the chances traits will be passed along.
I think what we all need to remember with linebreeding and inbreeding is that yes... it increases the chances of traits being passed down. But that means all traits, even the bad ones.
And unless you are lucky enough to have seen all of your dogs littermates (even the culls)... then there very well may be unfavorable traits in their blood that you don't know about.
So like any tool, linebreeding depends on the skill of the user. Anybody can swing a hammer but that doesn't mean what they build is going to be square. And we all know that having a good supply of straight boards to work with really helps.

Re: Line Breeding ????
Inbreeding or linebreeding may or may not cause deformatives, over or under bites, crooked legs or tails, dwarfism, hyperthyroidism, propensities toward poor temperment, hyperactivity, aggresiveness and a host of other things. These things are the results of both Sire and Dam carrying recessive genes for these traits. As was stated, unless you know the particuilar family of dogs for several generations, breeding is a "crap shoot." An example: You have bred you dogs on a "closed kennel' basis for a couple of generations and all have been black, white and tan. The next litter (same Sire and Dam) and you get one or more brown, white and tan pups. Both Sire and Dam were carrying recessive genes for the color brown.
Research your hounds to determine if they are good candidates for inbreeding or linebreeding. I linebreed and will inbreed if the two are the best in my kennel with the abilities that I want in a hound. When the results of such breedings are unfavorable, that cross will not be repeated.

Re: Line Breeding ????
In some of the reading I did on breeding, it was pointed out that due to the large number of combinations of genes involved, a male and his female littermate may be very different genetically. This is especially true their bloodlines contain a lot of outcrossing. Further, "cousins" in a really closely bred line could be much more similar genetically than the brother and sister in another breeding. Regardless of how we distinguish between "line breeding" and "in breeding", the degree to which particular genes concentrate varies and the results can not be totally controlled nor predicted on paper. We can "stack the cards" to favor what we want but there are no absolutes and we can have undesireable traits surface as well. Regardless of your breeding methods, choose you brood stock (male and female) wisely each time.

I'm consider breeding Sadie if she turns out to my likings, back to her grandpa, which is Larsen's Jackson.
