Help please! Mosquitoes

Post by D.J. Wright »

I have a new above ground kennel that built about a month ago, and I have my mama dog and pups that are 3 weeks old now in there. I went out there last night before bed to check on everyone and this was a first for me. When i opened the box there where around 50 to 100 mosquitoes inside and a few on the mama dog so i went to killing them, it felt like the more i killed more showed up. I change their water everyday and its not damp in the box. I sprayed repel on the outside of the box and taped some dryer sheets to the roof on the inside of box and this helped a little. The mama dog gets Ivomec every month for heartworm prevention but i dont start ivomec on pups until they are around 6 months old. So is there anything i can put on the pups and mama dog to protect them from these aggrivating things :angryfire: . Thanks for your help!

Go to Wal Mart or Lowe's and get you a Purple Martin house. I have one and I am never bothered by a mosquito day or night. Once they come in they will come back every year if you will clean their house out about April 15th. I have 25 acres here with a small stream on both sides and we never get a bite. I enjoy the birds and sometime I will sit for a long time and just watch them dive for bugs. They will go nuts when you mow or bush hog around them. You will think they are after you until you figure out what they are doing. I have never found a mosquito in a water bowl or around my dogs.

years ago what i would do was use horse fly and mosquitoe spary concentrate it comes in a gallon jug and you mix it with water in a pump sprayer. i would mix it stronger than the bottle said to and spray all around the dogs kennels every couple days, i never sprayed it directly on the dogs but i think it had a mixture ratio on the jug for dogs, i just sprayed the grass, the houses, just everywhere around the dogs it seemed to work pretty good. i dont remember what it was called but i got it at TSC

Dj, I had the same problem. What I did was install some small fans that blow across the doorway of the dog houses. Keeps the mosquitos and flys out of the dog house.

Mosquitos don't fly far so, look around for a source of standing water nearby where they are hatching and pour motor oil or diesel fuel on it. They don't live long and will disappear if you stop the hatching.

They love old tires that have water standing in them, one of the favorite places.

To keep them off you, eat a clove of garlic every day and they will never bite you, and if you don't want your breath to smell like garlic, eat the pickled garlic. Its sold at Cracker Barrell.

I'd do like Alabama John said and get rid of all the standing water they could be reproducing in. After that I'd get an electric bug zapper and hang it up near your kennel to get the adults. You'll be pleasantly surprised how well it works.
