Depends on the hound.....

Ive had a couple that I never put a collar on and they never needed one......

Ive had some than never got let loose without a collar.......

Not that one type is better than another.......

Usually the extreme hard hunters require a collar if you want to go home without leaving dogs in the woods.......

but, not always......had a tiny female that was a hunting machine, could be told where to go and she would go hunt there.........

I think some guys refuse to run without collars because they have not put the time in to teach their dogs to handle and behave..........

I prefer dogs that I have spent the time to train correctly, that end up not requiring a shock collar.......

On the other hand, I never put dogs down without a tracking collar.......by having trackers on I have caught guys trying to steal my dogs.......can tell if they go on off game.......find an injured dog or a dog caught in a foot hold trap.........

Shock collars and tracking collars are tools.......you dont use a hammer for every job and you dont use a screw driver for every job. I try to evaluate the dog and see what tools are needed. Every dog is a project for me......

I have collars but I have dogs I trust,I know anydog can make youi look like a fool but I have hunted them before and not had collars on them also I only have 3 collars and 5 dogs so I put them on the hardheaded dogs.Havent had to stimulate them for running off game but handling is a different story at times.I agree if you have them use them what is it going to hurt, just seeing who does things the old fashioned way.

I hunt one without an e-collar because she's too small. The weight would wear her down for sure, but the banging on the legs would be the main problem. I do run her with a tracking collar.

Ihave had dogs that didn't need them and some you could never run without one but if you got them why not use them? I have tried not running a collar on dogs i trusted and works good at times but when they get your confidence up BAM pull something stupid so if you have them use them

I always put them on the dogs but I have a couple that really don't need them but the collars make it awful easy when I am ready to go to the truck. All I have to to is hit the tone button and head toward the truck and they are great training tools for the pups.

I try to at least have 3/4 of the pack wearing them, I have a couple dogs that are followers and not leaders. I keep the collars on the leaders! Ha! Kerry

i never hunt with one on my dog. tracker only. when i run with a couple of my buddies we put down 5 or six dogs together without any shock collars. but i am not afraid to run into a race and blow it up when it is time to go and we stay in constant communication when they are just hunting. there is nothing wrong using shock collars in some circumstances but i myself would rather not have too much control over my dog. they are hounds! there are times when i have to turn around and get my dog but a lot of those times when i turn around and start heading towards him he jumps a bunny too. back before shock collars what did guys do? and also before tracking collars what did guys do? i wish i was alive back then to see how those hounds handled and hunted...maybe

i am a big fan of a good long check cord when working young dogs and pups. it doesnt take a lot of time a day to teach a dog commands and handling it just takes consistency.

later, dave

I bought a field seventy quite a few years ago, two dog unit when the collar size was first reduced in about half, I dont remember how old this thing is but it honestly has not been on a dog a half dozen times. The battery pack in the transmitter and collars are of course shot now but it doesnt matter- it never gets used. I call shockers Electronic crutches- lots of fellas that cant think about putting hounds down with out them whether its handling or trash or both myself, I refuse to own a dog that will not conform to me or my other hounds without the constant threat of electricity. No matter how good it can run a hare. Kurt
