Wompass Cat stalking my dogs

Post by BG BEAGLER »

Has anyone else around the country been noticing an increase in the Wompass cat population. Up until this year I had only seen 2 in my entire life and that number has doubled this year.

I run mainly at nite on bout 80 acres that has a chicken barn in the middle of it. The first time this year I saw a wompass cat I was pulling up in my truck and spotted it with my headlights then I've caught glimpses of a pair of them stalking my dogs while on track twice(luckily I carry a pistol and scared them off). Then the last time I was walking through a cut through between CRP fields and with my miners light I spotted one in a tree looking like he was ready to pounce.

I understand that these large cats are an endangered species and I may just be seeing the same two over and over but it seems to me that they are getting pretty brave and present a threat to my dogs and possibly me.

Does anyone know the penalty for killing one of these animals if caught or have any other suggestions on how to rid myself of this nuisance?

Matt, I have the same problem here. I have seen a couple within the last few weeks. It maybe breeding season for them because each time I see them they are in pairs. ;)
My suggestion on defending yourself and hounds is to continue carrying a big side arm and using it when you're able. I don't think they are protected and there is no season here in Va. for them. Shoot, take a quick picture for your hunting photo album and discard the cat in a location no one will find it. Try to stay brave and please be careful out there.

OK, I am from Michigan and I am gullible enough to bite. I was born in Ky and always told that a wompas cat was a 6 legged animal with a large ball like end to its tale which it used to slash out at enemies. It had 6 legs so it could run on four and use the other two to fight with. Could this possibly be your cat? It is not April fools day so I guess I am just a fool every day.

When our dogs ran trash, we just said they were after a wompas cat. Sounded good.

I have seen the Wompass cats cross breeding with the rare Bohemian Ground Hog here in WV and they are as bad as it gets!! They love the sink there teeth in beagles and will attack at any opportunity. Be safe out there!!! ;)

Since the WMR's are in denial that they exist in the eastern USA, how can they be endangered? If there are none here, let's keep it that way.

WE have a few around our place in SE Missouri. There was a picture in the paper where a guy had killed one in self defence. He claimed it was stalking him. I think you should contact your local Conservation Agent to see what can be done.

I was running on one of my farms below the house one night and heard something let out the god awfulest scream you have ever heard. I have heard it several times out on the place, but have never seen it, sounds like a wompuss cat to me. I have always heard of them, but never seen or heard one before. The farmer said something had got a couple of his cattle in the last couple weeks. That's why I never leave the house without my blue heeler and 9mm. We are gonna set up some trail cams where we have been hearing this thing and see if we can catch footage of it.

Be careful out there WFO and call if you need backup....

I hear if you hang a bra on the grill of your truck it will scare them off. Good luck. Make it big enough they can see it.

One been around here for years. They cover a big territory unless food is close. Our one seen a lot is black. Sorta rare color, but not too rare.
Seems most people attacked are in California.

Just because the wildlife managmewnt ppl won't acknowledge the existance of large cats in the Eastern US doesn't mean they don't exist...Asian carp aren't suppose to exist in the Western Hemisphere but they have overtaken the fresh water streams throught the Northeastern part of the country according to the Discovery Channel...Anything is possible...I just hope that by spreading the word by word of mouth we can do our part to keep ppl aware of the dangers that Wompass Cats present
