Re: What speed???
I believe the topic was about speed, not what you think as faultsI have a question that will have varied answers. Mark M. is good enough to put his great videos on here. I have a question as to what speed do most consider his dogs
on a 1-10 scale. THIS IS NOT INTENDED TO BE A CRITICISM TO HIS HOUNDS! I think they do a great job and he, obviously, runs them hard and they acccount for there game.
In his last video they are moving out a few times at a nice clip. What speed would they be rated???
Let me correct your post by saying that they are "MOUTHY AND WAY TOOOOOOO much nose for you.the BIG downfall is the Platinum dog is MOUTHY WAY TOOOOOOOOOOOO much nose IMO on frost or after a heavy rain.
Me on the other hand, I like the idea of knowing that no matter what the conditions are, because of that huge nose, my dog (I too own one of those mouthy Plantinum dogs) can still run a rabbit whether it is hot, dry, drought, windy, below freezing, 8" inches of snow with a frozen crust on top, on ice, or through swampy ponds and cattails. Will there be a few extra barks in some of those conditions? Sure will, especially with my dog. Do "I" personally care about the mouth? Not so much because I know what I have in that dog and I'll take the good with some of the bad. Guess its like everybody always says, "feed what you like". If I can get a dog that plows through the thickest of brush, runs the he!! out of a rabbit, and rarely drops one, but has a little extra mouth... I can live with it. I know I cant win in trials with him, but as long as the bunnies are out, I can enjoy running him or hunting him no matter what mother nature has in store.
As far as speed, Ive seen those dogs look like Applachian GDB hounds and at times look like greyhounds (maybe a slight exaggeration there). For me, and I'll speak for Mark, I like to watch hounds run the rabbit and work. I cant put a number on what speed I think they are but if they went any faster I would have a hard time keeping up with them and I dont run around with a camera in my hand. (Ive tried it and wasnt easy) If myself or Mark ran a faster dog then we would be missing out on what "we enjoy" about beagling and thats being able to watch them and in Marks case video and share with anyone who enjoy hounds of all styles.
If anyone has any video of any length that shows a faster hound/s, I would really like to watch. Ive not had the opportunity/pleasure to see any of the Mid West stuff that some of you speak of. Most of my experience/exposure has been with SPO style hounds.
Re: What speed???
My dogs don't fit any style. Unless you consider, wild and loose a style of it's own. I've tried to get them when they are running better, but; I haven't been able to keep up. To me they are not that fast. Other folk around here (South Carolina) wouldn't feed these speed demons.
Some of you may have seen this video on the rabbit hunting board. If you haven't, then I hope you enjoy; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHb4liqmftc

Re: What speed???
IVTA,
Good post. I did NOT want opinions on style! I am questioning speed. I call Mark's hounds a medium speed hound (5-5.5). They can get it done and love seeing his videos
and listening to his pack. That is what it is all about anyway!!
Beaglerun,
You have a nice bunch of hounds. Very much like the hounds I run in respect to speed and check area. Our big males reach a little more in the check from the beginning. I see nothing wrong with them as loose? I am just a gunhunter and just wanting some feedback. I call your hounds upper medium to fast (7-8) if the conditions allow. JMO. I would also call them "rabbit dogs", as are Mark's hounds!!
Thanks for the responses. If we all did not have our own preference it would be a "very vanilla" world.

Re: What speed???
Beagle run, Nice video. I think your pack is about 8-9 on speed. Thats just my opinion. I like my dogs to run 6 1/2to 7. I don't mind it if they a a tad over the 7 mark on speed but its gotta be controlled speed. I have friends who like them a little looser, but thats what makes this fun. No style is better then the next. Its what you favor that counts. I wish more people really would post some videos of their dogs... Deerhost.
Re: What speed???
I too wish that others would post videos if they have them. I have two packs. My other dogs are really young and are more spo speed. Lots of people don't understand it but, I enjoy owning and running both speeds. Over the last 4 years I have seen 5 different kind of days.
There are days when my fast dogs can really burn it up and the slower ones can't. There are other days when the slower dogs look really good, and the faster ones look like crap. Some days they both look their best. Rarely, there are days when they can all run together. Finally (I'm going to get in big trouble for this one
) there are days when neither of them can move a rabbit like they are supposed to.
These dogs are the ones I enjoy hunting over more. I hunt with some guys who like my other dogs better. After seeing these dogs run the same rabbits 1-2 hours multiple times, they had to admit that speed is overrated. Now does that mean they are going to change their preference? No, and they shouldn't. We like what we like, that's all.
