What speed???

Post by BCBeagles »

I have a question that will have varied answers. Mark M. is good enough to put his great videos on here. I have a question as to what speed do most consider his dogs
on a 1-10 scale. THIS IS NOT INTENDED TO BE A CRITICISM TO HIS HOUNDS! I think they do a great job and he, obviously, runs them hard and they acccount for there game.
In his last video they are moving out a few times at a nice clip. What speed would they be rated???

Second part, comparitively speaking, how much faster is the "Midwest Style" hound than these hounds in particular??

Hope you don't mind me using your hounds as an example Mark. You have some really nice dogs!!

Opinions only on speed please and not the "not my style" comments.
Just interested in opions who have seen more hounds than I??
Thanks. :D

well they are running on snow in the last two videos, so i would say speed is about a 5-6. it really looks like they well run as fast as what the scenting will allow them and that shows brains. imo

I have run with Mark and his dogs . They are a 4 maybe 4.5 a SLOW SPO style dog. Great line control , check work ,the BIG downfall is the Platinum dog is MOUTHY WAY TOOOOOOOOOOOO much nose IMO on frost or after a heavy rain. The reason I know is I have ( HAD) one that I purchased from a friend and running partner of Mark's. I have seen the dog run a 100 + yards and the other dogs never opened and never produced a rabbit. :censored:

They are a WHOLE lot slower than the Mid West dogs.

i enjoy marks' video's too. Compared to mine speed wise his dogs I'd say would be a flat medium speed. I went to a Midwest SPO trial 15" males was getting it pretty good. much faster than marks dogs.

I would call them a medium speed hound.About what the United Beagle Gundog Assoc. runs at their trials.Mark's hounds would not be able to run/compete with the Mid-West dogs as far as getting up and really rolling with the rabbit. His hounds look very nice if you like them that conservative.

I haven't seen more hounds than you but I would say 4.5-5 on speed. I wish people would post more videos of their beagles running.

Yeah but then we'd all have to actually be honest about how good or bad our hounds really are.

They sure are what I would call straight medium speed dogs. If you would take them to a mid west trial they would think it was a joke and you were just kidding. It is a total different sport. These dogs can't compete in a lot of the SPO trials because they just don't have enough foot. I know a lot of guys on this board want them to get up and go so they are not going to like this style of dog. I just hope when I put them on here they can enjoy the entertainment value and not worry about the speed. After all I am such a good shot how can you not enjoy such fine shooting. It is like Ford and Chevy not all of us are going to like the same thing. The object of the game is the same. Chase the rabbit around in a circle.
You guys can post on the good and bad comments all you want on the videos. Bad comments are better than none at all. Even you Jim. 100 yards and the other dogs did not bark? Were you able to get to the hole the rabbit was in? I would get me some dogs who had some nose power but I think we already had that conversation. LOL!

Hey fellas
I would have to agree, 5 flat med speed. Now you also have to take into consideration what part of the country these replies are coming from. From my experience, and this is my opinion nothing more. So dont read into it to far. Im from MI the farther south you go the slower the 1-10 scale gets. a 4-5 up here may be a 5-6 down south.
With that being said. Knowing that the guys on here like them fast, I really like the fact that mark is willing to put it all out there and show everyone what he is running. GREAT DOGS, GREAT VIDEO, not so great shooting. Keep them coming mark. You are a HOUNDSMAN. cant wait to see your next clips.

PS. my bitch line is built around dogs that are the same speed. LINE CONTROL is were its at.

I think marks dogs are around medium. I also give credit to mark for putting his videos on here for everyone too see. Whether its his intention or not, I think his videos have bridged a gap between houndsman from different locations around the united states. I'd like to give walker and suzie a pat on the head.
