How many dogs to a kennel?
I'm lookin into building a kennel and was wondering how many dogs i can have in 1 kennel. If i have old male and a young female and possible a young male, would there be a conflict of interest there. Do you normaly seperate by sex, like male with male, and female with female? This beagling is confusing!

i dont care to double dogs up depending on kennel space. i like to keep same sex together. male with females you just have to keep close watch of heat cycles.

Re: How many dogs to a kennel?
My kennel has 5 runs, 10X20 feet each. I house 8 Beagles, 2 males and 6 females. To prevent the males from fighting, I house them in seperate runs. The females are placed two dogs each in the remaining 3 runs. When I raise a litter of pups, I have to put one of the males in with acouple of females that are not going to come into heat soon.
Re: How many dogs to a kennel?
I don't like to double up if I can keep from it. 1 dog per kennel for me. I don't like dogs establishing a pecking order.

Re: How many dogs to a kennel?
I Keep males seperate from females. Like to keep 2 or more together in winter. A good consideration in building a kennel is heat in the floor. My vet considers that to be the most important factor to consider. The size of the runs would be a consideration. My 20 x 30 sometimes has up to 5 at one time. I put the bowls of food down in the same order and same place each day and simply say the dogs name. Each dog goes to their perspective bowl. I do not feed every dog the same so it is important to me that each dog eats only from its own bowl. I am the pack leader and they do fine with this.

#1 How well they get along with each other and if they all eat at the same speed. Most dogs don't eat at the same speed, they very a little.
#2 How big they are?
#3 How cold it is?

Re: How many dogs to a kennel?
I like to keep 2 to a kennel and mine are 12X12 but will soon be 12X14. I think it builds a relationship with the dogs being kenneled together and they stay warm better during the winter months.............plus if gives them a playmate when they are spending time in the kennel. I'M the boss at my kennel so fighting over food or anything else is not tolerated and they are taught that right from the get go. In extreme cases where I cannot stop it then I do not kennel those dogs together. If I have 1 dog that just can't seem to get along with anyone else it goes away.........I don't need the aggravation. And I'm talking about a habitual problem, not dogs butting heads every so often........that's gonna happen. As far as for establishing a pecking order from my experience they're gonna do that in or out of the kennel so if it's gonna happen it's gonna happen. That's also why I got tired of keeping males and I now only have females in my kennel. They have other issues to deal with but they don't run around pissing, sniffing and humping everything like most males do.

Re: How many dogs to a kennel?
My kennels are 10 X 10 each and I have 4. I usually don't keep over 4 or 5 dogs, so I keep only 1 or 2 dogs to the kennel.

I know several that keep 15-40 dogs of both sexes in one big pen. They have another tight built pen for females in heat. Also have a wooden off the ground pen for having and raising pups.

Re: How many dogs to a kennel?
I have a 16x20 outdoor kennel that is attached to my garage with a 6x8 inside kennel. The inside kennel is insulated and has two heat lamps for the cold nights. I usually only run one lamp. I keep males and females together as i want them to all get along, plus it helps they keep each other warm and play togerther. I use bulk feeders and have no problems with fighting over food.
