Re: Speed
Well, I doubt that very seriously. I am standing strong for midwest and I have never even put a win on a dog so doubt that would be the case. See most people like you put in my situation would be getting aggrevated and saying that I am getting cheated or theres buddy judging going on or whatever. However I go to many, many of the trials, I watch almost every winners pack and I look at it as that I am not running a strong enough dog to get it done, and yes you can run a strong dog that runs the line so don't go down that road. I don't agree with every winners pack but overall I am usually satisfied with who wins at the end of the day. I put a 4th on a dog out of 30 big males at my very first trial to. Doubt I was in a clique then either.Perhaps that could be the clique?

Chad,
Ive never claimed to be cheated.....I hope no one feels Ive cheated them! As a whole, the Midwest does a decent job of finding honest, hard working judges. My biggest complaint is the promotion of overly rough hounds. I will complement some judges that IMO do a great job of promoting a rabbit dog, Earl Rice, Jamie Rice, Don Smith, Brad Johnson, Dave Martin, Keith Weirs and Im certain there are several others. This is not a knock on others but to recognize some that are doing a great job.
I better sign off this post before it gets to personal.
Ill continue to read, thanks to all that had input.....

Hmmm
....I talk to Midwest beagle guys from WI, IL, IN, KY, OH, and MO almost on a daily basis....I must be considered in the "all inclusive" clique and just can't see it.
1 Midwest win in 5+ years of trialing.....I need a better clique

Mybeagles, I don't know you from adam, don't know anything about you, and not holding any hard feelings toward anyone. Just telling it like I've seen it. There has only been a couple different times that I feel that a dog won in a midwest trial and didn't deserve it that I can think of. Every other winners pack I have watched I have been satisfied with the pick of the winner. Lik I said from the beginning of the post, everyone should run what makes them happy and not worry about the rest. If you like running two different formats then thats great. If you think you would like midwest style dogs, then try it, if it's ukc then run ukc, or if it's little pack, large pack or whatever. I'm pretty sure that is why there are many different formats. I run a few other formats besides midwest and I personally don't like them as well, but I keep my mouth shut and have a good time win or lose.

Re: Speed
Kelly please get me in on this ''clique'' as well. To think about all the hours i have been spending running dogs, soloing, and putting my heart and soul into getting them prepared for this weekend. All the time and work was all for not. I When all I needed was two mutts from the roadside, entry fee money and to get into the ''clique''. How dumb was I.

Ron, I have to say that i don't understand you on this one. I didn't hear you complaining about speed when you were running one of the fastest little males i have seen on the trial curcuit in my 22 years in this sport.
As for the super-beagler hiding behind the user name of "mybeagles", i have some info that you might want to consider. The dog you spoke of FC Halls Boomer By Baron placed under 42 (yes 42) different judges from New Hampshire to Texas. He placed and won in SPO on rabbit, SPO on hare, and LP on hare and swamp rabbit. Class sizes vary from 7 to 33. I want to know what clique i am in that gets result like this from this big of an area. In 3 years of trialing he won the mid-west run-off, the southern large pack championship, 15 AKC lic. trials, and Better Beaglings High Hound Award. He placed in a total of 36 trials.
Judging from your past post on this board, i doubt you have a dog that can even come close to these accomplishments..Insted of rambling on and on , all i got to say is YOU CAN"T FIX STUPID !!!!!!!

I hope you understand my delima here....everyone else should be receiving their membership cards and 1970's jacket patches with their next newsletters. I am excited, up until today I didn't even know I was in a clique....I must have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
That's ok. I was looking for a clique with better looking members anyway

Re: Speed
Opinions tend to get people fired up..............I'm usually one of em but this time I'll just sit back and laugh.
You all can argue until you're blue in the face but an opinion is just that and they don't generally change based on what someone else thinks..........only through your own experiences. Anyone with a brain will know to go to a trial themselves to see if it's something they like...........not base it on a couple of opinions from one side or the other that they may or may not read on here. For god's sake lighten up a little bit.........some like it and some don't. I like to ice fish and some people think it's stupid when you can buy perch at the store. It may offend you more if you've put a lot of time, effort and money into something someone else thinks less of than you do but you gotta remember, it's just their opinion............and it works the same in reverse too. I can start the old argument about trialing is dumb to some people because not all formats promote the complete rabbit hound like they should.
And I'd get this
from all of you trialers even though it may just be my personal opinion.
It hasn't gotten too out of control yet but it seems to be headed down that road.
Remember an opinion is an opinion is an opinion..................................

Re: Speed
i've only been to one midwest type trial and was very open minded. i run in little pack and truly like the format and try and win with a tighter hound than most but they have to be rabbit dogs first. i have my share of success with the style of hound i run. the trial i went
to had me totally confused as to what the judge was looking at or for. someone said that alot
of judges were swade on bloodlines and that particular trial i'm not sure they weren't right. the menu for the day was turbo out of the top five hounds three turbo. yes i did have a turbo dog that ran in the pack like a pack dog. never had a check and just ran in the middle of the pack. he was NQB what ever that is to me it was just fifth place. i did have a dog that ran in
the same pack and had numerous checks and runs a better that average line and he didn't get the nood for the winners pack. so i guess i don't know what there looking for and decided not
to go back until i've learned more about beagling.

let honesty run through the veins of each and every judge at each and every trial at each and
every format.
every format.

Re: Speed
Mid-West judges are no different than anyone else; they are just men that love beagling. They have passed the AKC judging seminar; everyone usually gets a chance to judge if they want to, usually starting out with derby's & moving up. If a judge impresses people with the ability to stay on top of the dogs well & is known for being honest & able to find the best dogs he will get used by more & more clubs. If a judge gets a reputation for being dishonest, not being able to keep up with the dogs or maybe just can't recognize the best dogs, people will quit running under them. When the entries fall ,the club suffers financially so it is in the clubs' best interest to get judges that will bring the most dogs & be fair to everyone. Just because every judge goes to the same seminar, doesn't mean they will agree on every aspect concerning style & accomplishment. Some judges like a more conservative hound while others will let them get a little rough. Some will let a dog get away with a mistake or two while others will pick them up quick if they mess up. Both judges have to agree to pick up (disqualify) a dog.
Anyone can run thier dogs in Mid-West trials as long as the dogs are AKC registered. Beaglers just bring thier best rabbit dog & hope they impress the judges enough to place or win. Some dogs can keep thier head and run a smooth rabbit under pressure & some can't. The judges look at each pack as if they are out rabbit hunting & narrow it down to best in thier opinion that day. If they are honest, knowledgable & can see what's going on, the running should be better and smoother as the trial goes along. From my experiences in the Mid-West, the winners pack is usually the best pack of the day & able to run exremely well.
I think the Mid-West AKC Small Pack Option trials are the best & most fair way to evaluate hounds. I think it is more fair & competitive than it has ever been. That's my opinion based on many years of judging & running (losing a lot & winning a few) in the Mid-West trials.
