Greg,
I was referring to the male that won 11 trials. The point was not to single out that dog. He may be awful good, I have not watched him run. I just thought it interesting that the dog with the most wins in the association in 2009 is not being talked more about. The bigger point is, you have a male with 11 wins, a female apparently with 11 wins......if there was much competition would dog's be getting 11+ wins a year? Part of that is obviously low entries. Often under 10 in a class.
I have attended since the early 90's as well. Have judged and marshalled more than my share. If you don't think some VERY VERY rough dogs win and place then you are right; we have different ideas about what a good dog is. I wish you the best of luck, and hope you get everything your looking for from the Midwest trial circuit.

Re: Speed
I have been to a few Midwest Trials. I really liked the Club that ran at Coshocton Ohio. The Judging that day on the big males was very good. The other place I went wasnt much. I went twice, and the 1st time was a joke. The second time was a Derby, and they just had no rabbits. Those statements wont make me any new friends, but I really have some good ones already.

I run mostly ARHA, but I will take up for the Midwest on here. If you think there is a Clique how could Danny Vansickle finish a dog with 4 or 5 wins??? Nobody likes Danny, and Bandit definately is not a fast dog. Bandit though is a true rabbit dog. Maybe being in the loop can help you some, but if you have the right dog I think you could win at most clubs.

Re: Speed
Dave, You must be talking about a 13" male. I haven't seen him run, but I heard he was really good. It takes that many wins to finish in the 13" male class. This class, as you know, has always been the smallest class in the Mid-West. It would take 6 wins in a class of 20 to finish. I've never won 6 trials with the same dog. Have you? Just think how many different judges have judged him and liked him.
I can assure you he didn't win by spreading 300 yards in 5 seconds in a check.
When you make a blanket statement like this about the Mid-West, you are talking about all of the judges, clubs, trials, members & field champions in the Mid-West whether you realize it or mean to. Are you saying that is the type of dog everyone is promoting in the Mid-West? If you think we are Dave, you are wrong. I wish you could have seen what I've seen or been with me judging & saw some of the incredible houndwork I've seen over the years in the Mid-West. Then you would understand why I strongly defend the Mid-West's judges & hounds.

Re: Speed
I just checked out the Mid-West site & counted 40 different judges being used by the Mid-West clubs for their spring licensed trials. I'd say all of them are rabbit hunters first & know what a good hound is.

Thats the way it should be, stupid to give a dog a win when it doesn't deserve it. Also really wrong to give the handler a win because he's in the "loop" when someone else has a much better hound.
Back to speed. I like a hound with some speed and gears, I want him to make it to the front the right way without skirting and swinging. I rather have a hound with the good check work to take the front.
Speed can give you a loss or a win, depends on how much control that hound has.

Re: Speed
Ron & Dave,
What Northern Michigan Hare Association trial would be the closest to me? I have heard the same talk about thier trials as you guys have been spewing about the MidWest. Maybe I need to go check one one for myself.
In my opinion some of your statements go without merrit when you blanket them under the MidWest umbrella.
Are all MidWest judges poor? NO, but listening you you guys they are. There are good and bad ones in every association.
Are all MidWest classes rough? No, but I will be the first to admit that I do not care for the 15" male class and as a matter of fact I do everything I can to keep from even watching them but that doesnt mean they all are like that.
I probably like a cleaner dog than most folks in my area but I have seen some good 13" male, 13" female and 15" female winners packs.

Re: Speed
spo=#5 to #7 speed depending on the club and judges. this is excluding Mid West. Mid West runs #7.5 speed and uprbinford1 wrote:What are the speeds of some of the field trials ? like spo , lp ? ugbf????? rbinford1
LP=#8 and up
UBGF=is spo, so it depends on the club and judges

Re: Speed
I am afraid this post is an example of why alot of people do not trial. A man asks a simple question about what speed dogs do well in what format and instead of answers to the question people start bashing different formats and different field champions. Just because I have a bad experience at a trial doesn't mean the organization as a whole is bad.
Re: Speed
I dont think I ever mentioned judges??
It has more to do with the style being promoted.....doesnt hurt to be part of a crowd that promotes the same thing....
Good luck to all this Spring, who has the Midwest hound to beat?????? Who will be the next 11 trial winner? Ill be watching.......

Re: Speed
For what it's worth. When I lived in New Hampshire I trialed in Large Pack on Hare. Here in Tennessee I go to A.R.H.A. Little Pack trials.I have gone up to Kentucky to a Mid-West trial. And I have attended and spectated at a U.B.G.F. trial. I can honestly say that I have enjoyed all of them except the U.B.G.F. as that type of hound just doesn't do anything for me.Of course it's just my opinion but I thought that the Mid-West trial was the most enjoyable as far as fellowship, quality of hounds being run and knowledgeable judges evaluating the houndwork.THAT'S MY KIND OF HOUND THAT THE MID-WEST IS RUNNING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Speed
Dale,
If a guy reads this thread and decided to never attend a trial thats a pretty weak minded guy. Debating the speed, style, and type of hound is reasonable. I can attest that these very same threads have lead to some improvements and gets judges thinking about what they are doing or promoting. I dont know anyone that quit going to trials because of comments on the internet.......there are quite a few that didnt like to see rough hounds cleaning up at the trials and quit coming.
There are always people that look for reasons not to do something.......there are always others that find a way to make things happen. If this thread didnt exist those same people would find some other reason not to go.
So if we get rid of American Beagler Board trial attendance will start going up.........
I know there are many guys reading this thread that agree. Ive spoken to MANY. Just not willing to put there head on the "chop block". Supressing the truth will never lead to resolution. I hope to spur some thought.....if that scares people....they better not ever watch the evening news......that scares me!

Re: Speed
LOL!!Greg, I will attend some trials this May to point out what Im talking about. Not to bad mouth dogs or attack owners or judges, just expose what Im talking about. Im sure I'm viewed as a 'hater' but thats not true. Just seem to be seeing things different.
MYBEAGLES, maybe you shouldn't waste your time attending a midwest trial to "point out" that you are the GURU of beagling and know the best of the best dogs. Heck maybe you are the judge of a lifetime, I don't know, but I do know one thing, we sure don't need anyone like you at a midwest trial just so you can go back home get on your little computer and run the association down some more. So michigan would probably be a better place for your medium speed, never loose a rabbit, run in any condition, place for you to trial. If you don't like or trial the midwest then just don't worry about the midwest and run what you are more comfortable running, dont bad mouth it and run it down just because you are not satisfied with it when there are plenty of us that are!

Perhaps that could be the clique?
Chad,
I tend to come across evil on this board, I guess part of it is my poor articulation and inability to relay my inteded thought, but I look forward to meeting you Chad......see you in May.
