Pup not packing up
I have an 8 month old pup that has just started but not fully circling the rabbit back yet. He opens up on a hot trail and will give the rabbit hell until the other dogs come over to him and start barking and then he will come back to me or if the other dogs jump a rabbit he won't pack up with them I know he is still young and just started but i have not had any problems like this with pups in the past. So what I'm trying to ask is will he come out of this stage? Thanks!!

Sounds like he needs to be around other dogs. Kennel him with another dog. Let him run around the yard with another dog. He might just need association.

Try kenneling him with another dog for a couple of days and then take them out together. If that doesn't work take him out withother dogs and put him on a leash while they are running. Keep him leashed until he is chomping at the bit and then cut him loose. You might want to just try taking him out with one other dog for awhile also and then add dogs as he starts to pack with the first dog.

He is in the kennel with other dogs and I have took him out with others dogs, I just don't understand why he won't go with the other dogs because he knows they are running a rabbit.

pup not packing
Just keep taking him, he will go eventually. Was he in the starting pen by himself or with other dogs? I always try to make sure that my pups are in the starting pen with another pup of mine and with some strange pups. Packing is important to me so I make sure that they will pack before I start soloing them.

I haven't had him in a training pen I have been training this one by my self but i have thought about puting him in a training pen i think that it might help. I was thinkin of the method you just told me to about taking one dog out with him and then adding others. Thanks Big Dog
(Could he be intiminated by the other dogs?)

Don't know for sure w/out seeing the dog - but possibly the other dogs are too strong or fast for the pup. I had a slower female that would always slip off to find her own rabbit b/c she did not want to run w/ a faster pack. Even if she started a track, once the others got on it and passed her, she leave and go try and find her own rabbit. If there is not a major speek difference, I'd guess your pup will grow out of it w/ time.

Yeah thats what i was thinking but i have never had a pup like him in the past that wouldn't pack up like him but he is starting out pretty good by himself and is almost circling a rabbit now.

Jay, I've got one here now just like yours! She's almost 11 months old and has solo circled a few rabbits, but everytime I take her with other dogs, she refuses to have anything to do with them. I took her just yesterday evening for 5 hours. She ran some solo until my buddy showed up with his pack. Shewas already running a rabbit when he turned loose and they packed to her and out she came.....she refused to run with them the rest of the evening. She eventually wandered off and jumped her own rabbit and ran it for awhile solo, but it was hit-an-miss running. I have tried to pack her with several packs of dogs of different buddies and she will not hunt with them yet. I have her kenneled with other pups and she is very social with other dogs but just refuses to run with them, and I know it's not because they are faster than her...I have saw her take a rabbit as fast as any 10 month old pup I have ever seen, she has plenty of foot, more so than the packs I have tried to run her with. I've just got my fingers crossed that she will eventually get over this and start packing soon.

Yep that is exactly how my pup is he will burn a rabbit by himself but if another dog trys to pack up with him he will be right back feet and then he will go off and try to find another rabbit.
Well it's looking like he is going to be one heck of a solo dog if he doesn't pack up I'm still going to keep him around.

my 2 cents
I had a male that could flat burn a rabbit up solo, i gunned him solo and every time i tried to pack him up he would come back out. If he started the rabbit and the other dog would come up to run he would pull off and come back. He never did pack up so i sold him to a guy that was only going to own 1 dog. He is currently doing great , running solo. good luck

This dog is a sentimental thing to me, before my Grandpa past away he told me to keep this dog and he said he would turn out to be a good one.
Well he is starting to come on strong now and almost circling a rabbit but i took another dog out and he did pack up with him once and he took off with the other dogs rabbit because the other dog was older and slower but i had to put him on the track with the other dog.

I have a pup out of Syris and she will only run behind my fast dogs and will not give mouth or put her nose down. With my old slow male dog she will run the front or rear with good hunt and give mouth. I asked awhile back about this and alot of beaglers said she was probably overwhelmed with the faster dogs. The speed and bark from the other dogs could have made her just run the back without hunting. Perhaps she was just trying to keep up. I have never ran her again with the faster dogs and have watched her progress real nice.
