Re: SNARES AT ADDINGTON STRIP MINE GROUND
Very sorry for your loss!!!!
In Ohio the law is that snares must be tagged with the owners name and be of the type that does not continue to tighten after pressure against it stops. If you come across trapping that is illegally being done anywhere report it to your game warden.
On the other hand trappers do us a service in that they rid us of predators such as coyotes. We must remember they are part of the outdoorsman brotherhood. If they do it legally they have the right just as you and I do to hunt.
We all should attend our wildlife council meetings and push for the passage of good game laws such as releasing snares and notification that traps are on the property. Use the system guys to make sure your state considers your hounds!!!!!! Doing those things listed above while trapping will reduce the chances of off game and dogs being killed and will not reduce the trappers effectiveness. Responsible Trappers do not want to catch your hounds.
Again I would be devastated if I lost one of my hounds this way....... I am truly sorry for your loss.

sorry to here about your dog.
if you think it would help i would surf the interent for some trapping websites in the state your dog got snared in.post there how your displeased with the trappers lack of ethics on warning/flagging/tagging the snare.
them trappers really do worry about domestic game kills, they dont want it to happen so they lobby the state to have rules and regulations to allow it.they maight know of someone who works that area and they may police themselves.they dont want to lose thier priveledges like we dont want to lose dog hunting priveledges.here in pa this site may be able to direct you to one from where you are at.

Re: SNARES AT ADDINGTON STRIP MINE GROUND
I was reading this post last week and just yesterday one of my dogs got caught in a snare. When I found him he was standing like a statue with the cable tight around his neck, and I mean tight. Also, when I say standing like a stature he was not moving a muscle, he had no reaction as I apporched him, I though he may alseady have been dead somehow in a standing position. I have never seen a snare before but monkeyed around with it and managed to release my dog unharmed (it had what I have fond out is called an L type release tab). I have since done some research and found that this was a non-lethal snare that is inteneded to keep the anminal alive by tightening when they pull and then slightly releasing when they stop, however it seems to me that if the anmal were to keep pulling and is not released soon it would eventually choke to death. The area is not private land and no signs were in the area of trapping. Also no ID on the snare. I am curious if this "non-lethal" snare was the same type of snare your dogs have been caught in.

Re: SNARES AT ADDINGTON STRIP MINE GROUND
Househounds, that is the typical reaction of any dog that has been on a leash.I'm not sure that the L-type relaxing snare lock is the best way to go.I use a washer type that relaxes a little easier. As far as putting up signs and such around traps, you have to understand that trappers are the target of thieves alot of times. Not only do people steal their catches but also equipment. With traps costing ,say an average of $8.00 apiece, you can see were this could be quite expensive. If the snare has a relaxing type lock,it is a cable restraint.A true snare is meant to quickly take the animal out(most of the time within a minute). Any cable restraint set too close to a fence or other intanglement situation becomes a threat to animal due to hanging. If the cable restraint wasn't tagged it was most likely by someone that didn't have permission or otherwise illegally set,and I wouldn't hesitate to report it to the local warden. The use of cable restraint in Missouri came about with trappers and houndsman associations meeting and coming to an agreement. It's a shame that their are a few indivuals that ,due to their greediness or disreguard for the law, make it hard on the rest.If hunters ,houndsman, and other sportsman don't get along,I quarantee that the animal rights people will use it as a tool to stop any and every form animal harvest to include fartming and ranching. In Missouri,we are lucky to have a game commission seperated from state legislation to keep dumb game laws from being passed by tree huggers. If your state doesn't have such a set up then I would babd the sportsman in your state and try to get it changed or you'll end up like California.

Re: SNARES AT ADDINGTON STRIP MINE GROUND
bigjohn,
Thanks for the reply and the clarification between a snare and a cable restraint trap...I too understand that all of us outdoorsmen need to get along, and I think there is room in the woods for all of us. I never thought about not marking a traping area for fear of someone stealing the trap or the game in it. Thanks for making that point. I am certain this trap was for problem coyotes and I am all for getting rid of them. At the time this happened I felt that my dog was in serious danger, and even now I do not plan on running them in this area again. Based on your knowledge of these cable restraint traps am I being overly concerned? I am not trying to put you on the spot, just want to hear other opions. I try to take all the right porcaution to keep my dogs safe like most of us do but as I write this I am thinking that this sort of thing could happen anywhere.

Re: SNARES AT ADDINGTON STRIP MINE GROUND
This is indeed a sad situation, but some good may come out of it learning a bit more about trapping and avoiding snares or being prepared with a set of side cutters. There has been some great input here and I have learned a bit more....never thought about thieves either.
Re: SNARES AT ADDINGTON STRIP MINE GROUND
HH,if the cable restraint could not tangle in any woody material such as saplings or reach any fences I wouldn't be afraid to run my dogs there. But then again my dogs see a chain once in a while and I'm confident that they wouldn't choke themselves out.But everyone has to make their own choices.
