Short hunt yeasterday- coyotes

Post by D.Gross »

Season ended in Indiana on State Fish and Wildlife Areas on Jan.31st. Can still hunt private ground or state Wetlands until Feb. 15th. I went to a Wetland Area yesterday that a friend hunts a lot. I've hunted there also, very thick, with lots of briars, and a beaver pond. The state partnered with DU when they aquired the land.
We had about 2 " of fresh snow. As soon as I got into the brush I saw fresh morning rabbit tracks and LOTS of coyote tracks following the rabbit tracks. I didn't like what I saw. I have two female litermates. My Sadie dog jumped a rabbit right away and

they ran it well. Just before I saw rabbit I heard a coyote bark about 50 yards away. I shot the rabbit and heard another bark. I fired a shot in the direction of the bark, blew my whistle (Have dogs whistle trained) and yelled about the motherhood of the coyotes. They moved about 100 yards away and barked again.
I gathered up my dogs and headed for the truck.
It's not worth getting a dog chewed up or killed. My buddy lost one and had the other torn up late in January a couple seasons ago.
Only problem with the Area is that it's so thick you don't have any visual for any amount of distance. I warned my buddy as he has never had a problem there or seen much sign. This time of year I think coyotes are on the move more and are very territorial.

coyotes are rutting right now and very territorial..also very vocal. nows the best time to be calling them. we've been running them with dogs the past few weeks and been doing pretty good.
we called in two males a few weeks ago on different stands and one went 44lbs and one went 40lbs. both fur'd up real nice.

id definitely watch the dogs close though right now.. the coyotes will be standing there ground this time of year.

Can anyone point me to somewhere that I can learn about trapping these things? I want to try to kill as many as I possibly can.

Coyotes start dogging in the middle of Jan.This is when you'll have multiple coyotes traveling together.Usually have a female with 2 or 3 males trying to claim her.At this time they are very territorial and wont hesitate to jump any other K-9's .This period last thru the end of Feb when most of the matings have taken place.

We see 2 this mourning driving to the Large Pack hunt in KY today, and didn't have the rifle. Planning on driving around up here tonite and looking for those dang things.
You can hunt yotes year round in Indiana w/written permission. I think this is the first winter for year round yote slaying.
