puppy troubles
I need some help, Have a first litter female who is not wanting nurse her pups she is not mean to them. SHE JUST NOT LETTIN THEM NURSE. She balls up in the corner real tite and wont let them in. As they are only about 8hrs old I am very concerned. I really do not want to lose these pups need some advice.. They are in the warm and have bean fed a little with a bottle. So for rite now they are in fair shape...
Re: puppy troubles
can you force her to lay down?...if you can than she will probably start letting them once she catches on...hope this helps!

Re: puppy troubles
See if you can get her to lay down without the pups being in there with her.Just pet her and talk to her and see if she'll relax with just you with her.If she will ,after a bit try putting in just one pup and put it up to a tit and keep petting and talking with her while it nurses. If she'll do that then try adding another pup and if that goes okay keep adding another pup.
If that doesn't work you could ask your vet. for a mild sedative that might help her relax and try that.
It's important that those pups nurse soon as they need to get the colostrum that she lets down first and they won't get it from a bottle and without it you'll be fighting a uphill battle.
If the bitch doesn't relax and be at ease then she probably won't let her milk down even if you force the issue .

We got here to lay down and now she is starting to take to the puppys slowly. With the help of the of good lord she will raise these pups. She is still not acting right. But hopefully everything will work out we will still keep a eye on her and the 4 pups.

Re: puppy troubles
That's what i was thinking...maybe another pup to be born only late...I've had them have a pup 4 hours latter.. maybe stuck or worse... Take her temp, 101 is normal, 103 is infection.Blubeagle wrote:well...hopefully she is settled down by now!...but this got me to thinkin about an experience i had a time back...are you sure there were only 4 pups in her (x-ray)???...dont want to worry you!..just thinkin about it!

I had a female that had 3 or 4 pups on Tue. then had 3 or 4 more on Sat. I've never seen it before or since.
