A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
Back in the 60's when Dad's dog Don ran two rabbits to the gun on the same circle. He retrieved them both. Don was almost blind and couldn't hear. Don was 15 and I was 16.
Watching a hound work the rabbit on my first rabbit hunt. I was in 6th grade and been hooked ever since. Love hearing the music that the hounds made...........
I have so many with friends and family but I guess when I was a youngster my dad
took me on what may have been my first rabbit hunt anyway that lil hound ran a
bunny out of the weeds and I took my first shot that I remember at that bunny turning
it a complete summersault landing back on it's feet running dad killed it b4
it hit the weeds on the other side . I couldn't tell you all the times I missed game when
I was a child and he was there to take care of that second shot . My dad is my hero
Last winter we took the guy that lives behind us out with his son and one of his boys friends. The dogs were running good that day and we set the boy up in a spot and the rabbit stopped about 20 yards out in front of him and he shot his first rabbit. It was then that I realized that it was within 50 feet from where I shot my first rabbit 16 years before. It's great to see these things come full circle!
Hunting with my grandpap bever, and him telling me to be careful of the dogs in the brush, and like any 7 year old i said know and he would shake his head and laugh. Now when i take my grandsons i say the same thing, and they say i know,so things don;t change no mater how old you get.
i have a lot of great memories of hunting...the first hunting memory i have is...my dad had 2 beagles when i was a little boy and he took me and my brother hunting with him...my brother was about 6 at the time...so i was about 3...i couldnt walk through all the briars and high grass so my dad carried me on his shoulders...he shot 4 rabbits and 6 quail with me on his shoulders...talking about a good view of the action...it was great!!!...iv been hooked every since!!...my dad was a big coon hunter and it was kinda hard to get him to go with me once i grew up!!...but he would go with me every new years day!!...we would always go to a real good spot we knew..there was a sink hole that was about 20 yards across..full of briars and some thick stuff...we had been known to jump 5 rabbits out of that one sink hole!!...the first rabbit would always run to the same place..so i would put dad right there...it would run right straight at him...he would unload that browning automatic as fast as he could...5 shots...LOL...it was really funny how frustrated he would get...after 3 straight new years day hunts of him missing that rabbit...he finally got it on the forth trip!..my dad was shot and murdered back in 2001..boy do i miss our new years day hunts...i guess i just miss him dearly...he was no doubt...my hero!
A few years back my father and I went out hunting some hare, the dogs jumped a hare shortly after we got there just as the sun came up, they ran it steady for about 2 hours before they got out of cover enough so we could shoot, well I started off shooting and missing, then my father did the same, the dogs continued to pound that bunny until dark with out missing a beat, we had tons of shots at it but just kept missing, at the end of the day we counted up 21 empty shells between us and I had to break up the run to get the dogs because we still hadn't hit that rascal It's the most memorable and my favorite trip even if we didn't bag the hare, we both still talk about it, that's the only time we've ever shot and missed like that but if you can't laugh at yourself who can you laugh at?
Back in the early 70s looking at that mix up bird dog pointed on a rabbit when the beagles were running another one.I mean stay there till you kill the rabbit with the beagles. In other words he was saying.I Have one ready for you beagles when you get done with that one. They were the days.
After just getting into rabbit hunting again and having my first dog, I would say the first time hearing my pup open up after releasing a rabbit from a cage then couple days latter hearring her open up again on a wild rabbit really got my blood pumping
I've only had beagles for a couple years, so my favorite memory is more recent. My first beagle Zeus was about 7 months old and I was running him with his sire, who was about 11 at the time. A rabbit went off in a big circle thru open woods, and they seemed to lose it after a while. About 10 minutes later, i saw the old dog coming back so I started to call Zeus back when I heard his shrill yapping start up again. The old dog heard it too after a bit and went back to join in. I saw the rabbit go into a brushpile and it didn't bust out till Zeus got within a few feet of it. I waited till it ran by me and shot it with my old single shot .410. Zeus kept trailing till he came on the dead rabbit and i heaped all sorts of praise on him. That was the 1st rabbit I shot over him, but definitely the most memorable....
I took my lil cuz Ryan and he shot at rabbits all day..i swear the dogs was looking and shaking thier heads on every circle ..on shot 24 he finally got his first rabbit..he crippled it a lil..my dog Fred ran up to it and grabbed the rabbit before he got there..Ryan looked back at me with this look like oh no he is gonna eat it! then Fred turned and walked straight to Ryan and looked up like here it is son good job. The smile on Ryan's face is what all hunting is about..it's good to remember moments like this as a reminder..great stories keep em coming
Mine is rabbit hunting and my grand dad was the dog. This was over 40 years ago. My granddad was an old time rabbit hunter. Had good dogs most of his life. At this time he had no "Beattles". We got up early one morning with a "skift" of fresh snow on. Went behind the house and fresh tracks everwhere. He posted me with the old Model 11 Remington and said watch for the rabbit. He went off and I soon heard him clapping his hands and walking. Sure enough here came the rabbit ...I shot with the full choke and missed, but it was the greatest day of rabbit hunting in my life. A little teary eyed here recalling this. He's been gone for over twenty years, but this hunt is as clear as yesterday.
I have many but I guess my most memorable one is the day my boy got his 1st cast win in UKC trials with Rabbit Ridge Maggie (IFC DOYLANDS JIMMY ) he was about 14. He beat a couple old timers Mike Magers and Scott Fluhart they got a kick out of it though .Any how we ended up in the final 4 together I was running Rabbit Ridge Yogi ,I placed 2nd he got 3rd it was nice.
