What's better than a dead coyote?

Post by Briarhoppers »

Two dead coyotes!

This black yote one has been around our place for a couple years and I've been trying get him. He was also in a group of coyotes that killed a young male beagle of mine about a year ago. I found him and a lady friend sunning in a green field - slipped in and shot them at 225 and 300 yards.

I am planning to take hides and get them tanned. I've thought about mounting the black one, but we'll see. The lighter one actually is a little more blond than the typical grizzled gray color.

Hey Pete
Nice pics.of the coyoes. The pics. you showed me on your cell phone today while we were hunting didn't do them justice. Those are nice!
Thanks for the hunt today down at the Haven. That was fun and some of the best running and gunning I've had this season.I'd say that place has a lot of rabbits in it this year.
We ran a 6 dog pack of all females.Pete's are strongly bred on Smoke's Creek Syris McGee and my 3 are linebred Maravic's Blue Ninja.
Those aren't the first coyotes Pete has shot there at his house this year,he's been wearing them out!

James - you are right that is a Winchester Model 70 Featherlight. The scope is Leupold 3x9. The caliber is 257 Roberts. I use this gun for both deer and coyotes (I also use a 30-06 on deer). The 257 Roberts is not typically thought of as a long distance bullet, as in factory loads it is loaded w/ round nose bullets and ballistic are pretty poor. However, w/ hand loads and Hornady light Mag. loads this caliber does well out to 300 yards. I've killed 2 or 3 deer and 2 or 3 coyotes out to 300 yards w/ it. Main thing is to know how your gun shoots. Also, you don't have to have a special coyote gun - I don't. Just grab anything you got in the closet...just know how to shoot it.

In regards to calls, the only thing I use is a rabbit in distress call. Sometimes it works....sometimes it doesn't! However, most the coyotes I kill are from my seeing them a long ways off and slipping into range and getting a good rest. I don't typically shoot coyotes while in the deer stand b/c I don't want to hurt my chances at that buck I'm after.

I also kill alot of coyotes when they are cutting hay fields in the summer. The yotes will sometimes literaly follow the tractor around as the field is cut. I have several guys that cut hay that will call me and let me know where they are cutting and some will call and tell me there are yotes in the field and I will get there if I can. One time this guy had two yotes following him on the tractor and he called me and I got to the field and he pulled out of the field and jumped off and I jumped on the tractor w/ my rifle and I made a lap around the field and sure enough here came the coyotes and I shot one at 30 yards behind me.

Main reason I shoot coyotes - they have killed two of my beagles, they are killing fawns in our area and they are hurting the rabbit population in some areas. Two times in the last few weeks I've heard the beagles barking at night and I've gone out there to hear coyotes yipping, howling and running all around the kennel. I killed one coyote a couple months ago as it was attacking (and killing) a neighbors dog. The dog got chewed up really bad, but lived. They brought the dog by to see me a little while ago and show me that it was doing well. That was my longest shot todate at 360 yards.

Shoot all you can.
