--The New Case Against Immigration, Both Legal and Illegal
We've all heard the laments: "My grandpa from Sicily learned English, and my grandma from Minsk got by without welfare. So what's the problem with immigrants today?"

As Mark Krikorian argues in this provocative book, what's different today is not the immigrants, but us. Today's immigrants are very similar to those of a century ago, but they are coming to a very different America -- one where changes in the economy, society, and government create fundamentally different incentives for newcomers. In other words, the America that our grandparents came to no longer exists. And this simple fact must become the new starting point for the explosive debate about immigration policy.

Krikorian argues that although mass immigration once served our national interests, in today's America it weakens our common national identity, limits opportunities for upward mobility, threatens our security and sovereignty, strains resources for social programs, and disrupts middle-class norms of behavior.

So as the politicians argue about border fences and amnesty, they are missing the bigger picture: the harmful impact of large-scale settlement of all kinds of immigrants, whether legal or illegal, skilled or unskilled, temporary or permanent, European or Latin or Asian or African. Modern America has simply outgrown immigration, and we must end it before it cripples us.

--

President George W. Bush entered office in 2001 just as a recession was starting, and is preparing to leave in the middle of a long one. That’s almost 22 months of recession during his 96 months in office.

His job-creation record won’t look much better. The Bush administration created about three million jobs (net) over its-- eight-- years, a fraction of the 23 million jobs created under President Bill Clinton’s administration and only slightly better than President George H.W. Bush did in his four years in office.

Here’s a look at job creation under each president since the Labor Department started keeping payroll records in 1939. The counts are based on total payrolls between the start of the month the president took office (using the final payroll count for the end of the prior December) and his final December in office.

Because the size of the economy and labor force varies, we also calculate in percentage terms how much the total payroll count expanded under each president. The current President Bush, once taking account how long he’s been in office, shows the worst track record for job creation since the government began keeping records. –Sudeep Reddy

The chart can be sorted by any of the following categories.

President Jobs created Jobs at end of term Jobs at start of term Payroll expansion Jobs created per year in office Population growth Percent change in population
George W. Bush 3.0 million 135.5 million 132.5 million 2.3% 375,000 22.0 million 7.7%
-----------------------------------------------------------
Bill Clinton 23.1 million 132.5 million 109.4 million 21.1% 2,900,000 25.2 million 8.9%
-------------------------------------------------------------
George H.W. Bush 2.5 million 109.4 million 106.9 million 2.3% 625,000 12.5 million 4.8%
Ronald Reagan 16.0 million 106.9 million 90.9 million 17.6% 2,000,000 17.3 million 7%
Jimmy Carter 10.5 million 90.9 million 80.4 million 13.1% 2,600,000 9.8 million 4.3%
--
--The $787 billion economic stimulus package has created or saved between 1.7 million and 2 million jobs, but its impact on the economy ebbed slightly in the final quarter of 2009 compared with prior months, the White House said Tuesday night.
--
-- Bush administration created about three million jobs (net)-----IN EIGHT(8)--YEARS EIGHT(8)--YEARS EIGHT(8)--YEARS

Releasing the administration's second quarterly report to Congress on the stimulus's impact, Christina Romer, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, said a third of the tax cuts and spending in the package is out the door. Her office estimates that the stimulus added between 1.5 and 3 percentage points to the growth in gross domestic product in the final quarter of 2009. That estimate, which is in line with other analyses, is lower than her office's estimate of stimulus-related impact in the third quarter, between 3 and 4 percentage points. --ONE(1) YEAR

Rufus, CAN'T YOU POST ANYTHING RECENT??? Notice the key line, "is preparing to leave in the middle of a long one..."

Your information is twisted, as is your understanding of the real world.

Tim is right, the relevant question is "where are the jobs??"

Tony
The 1st amendment allows the usual liberal narcissistic "I think.." which is how they start all their sentences.

The second amendment protects us from implementing "I think"

You say independent, your stances say liberal, you have yourself fooled though apparently and as far as responding to posts, I am more than aware you ignore the facts and keep saying the same ole rhetoric, while the whole time avioding what is relavent today with this administration but your fun to provoke and I have to admit a daily shot of humor. After Clintons great piece of legislation for american workers it's amazing Bush could create any jobs. Obama is about 5 million in the whole now, HHHHMMMMMMMMMM!!!

Where is the jobs, last time i Iooked at something I bought it said made in China, the time before that it said made in korean, or made in some other place far away, last time I needed customer service I got some cat in India that did not speak english. Wheres the jobs they are overseas thats where. Unless you are good at flipping burgers or cooking chicken or delivering pizza's good luck. The great nation of the USA is out sourceing jobs by the millions because of the policies set forth by our leaders in Washington. The things produced in this country thirty or more years ago were made with pride and quality now the are made cheap for the biggest profit. Big goverment only needs taxes and sheep. Is obama going to fix jobs lost, No, Is goverment going to fix it NO. They want more sheep. We are headed toward a country of service work, not manufactoring or technology.
