Dogs want to eat the rabbit!
Just wondering if there is something I missed in the training of the pups to get them to not wanna eat the rabbits shot. The ones that are killed I can remedy by getting to them before the dogs. The wounded ones they catch are what concerns me. Any thoughts?

Don't know the answer but I will share that I just had a dog (1yr and 5mos old) die last week because he ate a rabbit that one of my other dogs caught( was wounded) and carried away. The other 3 dogs went back to hunting but the other dog was not to be found for an hour, later came out belly bulging.

Re: Dogs want to eat the rabbit!
I don't know how to stop one from eating a rabbit but a friend of mine broke one of mine from jumping up grabbing the rabbit while you were holding it in your hand. He grabbed the dog by the ear and picked it up by the ear and gave it a twist and said no and so far she hasn't jumped up and grabbed another one since. He said his father taught him that trick years ago but I don't know if it will work every time or not, guess I will have to wait until another one of mine starts doing it and then I will try it myself.
Re: Dogs want to eat the rabbit!
I'd knock that desire out of them. My cousin's dog picked up one I shot on New Year's Day and I had to chase him down to reclaim it. If that were my dog, there would have been some training taking place after I caught him.
I have a male that used to fight with the pack when they caught one but I adjusted that out of him. Now if he catches one he kills, drops and moves on looking for another one.

I love dogs that run to catch and eat.
It shows what is on their mind and keeps them enthused and pushing to overtake.
Dogs that run to follow a track that has no goal at the end just don't show as much excitement.

They hunt to eat! Ha! Like us or like we were in the days before Wal-Mart! I have to agree that a dog that chases a rabbit that does not have the "killing" desire would not be much fun. Kerry in Maryland

Re: Dogs want to eat the rabbit!
ok Question?
Do you Think that Showing a young Dog the rabbit letting them Mouth it and get all worked up has anything to do with it??
If So then thats where i am Going Wrong I ALWAYS show the pups the rabbit and let em get a taste of it Seems to help Fire em up!!!!!!!
If So then I guess I will just keep Doing it Wrong.........
I can Deal With them gettin a rabbit now and again as long as they keep showing me that desire to Catch it!!!!!!!
On Another note i was always taught NEVER to give em the head as the teeth and parts of the Jaw Are undigestible and can get caught up in the intestinal track...Any truth to that???
AND I always Deworm them after 10 to 12 days for tapes after they have ate a rabbit...

I like to leave the rabbit and the end of the scent trail so they know to go look for another anfter getting as smell of the kill. Doesn't bother me either if they get one on occassion, but I don't shoot many and would like to bring a few home. On the same hand, don't want to do anything to discourage them from wanting to chase.

Re: Dogs want to eat the rabbit!
All of my dogs will eat the rabbit. If you're not there first, there's not much left. I used to have dogs that would pay no attention to a dead rabbit. These dogs are much better hunters and ate up with desire.

Re: Dogs want to eat the rabbit!
all my dogs like rabbit and will try to eat them i try to be their first to get it before they do and if im not i have run around like a fool yellimg down, come here, and a few other not so nice phrases, now if they get it i tone them and still run and try to salvage what i can, personally i like a dog that looks on a rabbit as a meal not a toy more desire in my opinion Donald

TC
I've feed the head all my life with no problems.
Used to feed the guts too for more years than I can, well, a long time. Now, cast them in a tree.
We worry way too much about worms in my opinion.
