Re: way back when.
I can't speak to beagle field trialing BUT when I competition hunted coon hounds I witnessed buddy judging, buddy screwing and buddy fighting and that's when I decided that trailing was no place for me to go for fun as it all depended on which buddy showed up that night.

good point steve, im not saying they are all bad, in fact most are good. there are very few bad ones and they know who they are. most people won't reply on this post thinking it's gonna hurt there reputation in future trialing.

This is a little off track and I am not trying to take away from the original topic but since people are professing their love for trials I thought I would ask, Why would you waste ( and I say waste because that is strictly my opinion I am not trying to cause an argument) a weekend on a field trial when you could go hunting or just go run your dogs? I have wasted lots of them myself in the past and now looking back I cant answer my own question! I love rabbit hunting as much as anyone I dont always love beagling (if that makes any sense) but I really cant find any reason to go to a field trial. Kurt

Re: way back when.
well last trial I went to 1 of the judges spent most of the day leaning on a tree in the woods talking on the phone to his girlfriend about what they were going to do and where they were going to go that night the other judge when asked if they could see the score card on their dogs so they could see where they needed improvement the judge answered with I do not use the score cards I keep their scores in my head so the guys asked could he tell them what areas they needed to improve in he stated he did'nt know he could not remember every packs faults and good traits and this was with over 45 entries (good memory?)and it seems every trial at this place is won by the owner or the people putting on the trial been this way for years and if a judge can not make it and someone else is brought in to judge and gives it to the dog who deserves it he is not asked to judge again(they pay 50.00 to judge) now before you staert getting your hackles up about this post let me explain this is not a sanctioned trial but there is big name dogs who enter and do not win even tho they have won gundog trials and fieldtrials these are all fun hunts with nothing but trophies and bragging rights ,most of the time the judges are kin to the owners or their hunting buddies .it cost $25.00 to enter these hunts and as stated earlier these are fun hunts for trophies that cost about $100.00 for all 5 place trophies ,now if they buddie judge in these types of trials what do you think they will do in a real trial with fame and champion points awarded? but with this said you just have to take it with a grain of salt and take your punishment until you get a good ,fair, honest judge and they are out there they are just scarce as a jump dog.and remember oppinions are like A%#holes everyone has one, just my 2 cents

I think I might have the answer to this question... Because when 85% of these trials are going its not even hunting season. Most are ran in the spring under optimal condition. I'm not saying trials don't serve a purpose but when I first got into it I thought they were great. I honestly enjoyed them less each time I went. I can't believe any obejective beagler would use a trial as a measuring stick to judge a dog. When you want to go hunting in MI in around zero temps with wind blowing 15 mph do you put 6 or 7 or even up to 9 dogs on the ground. Heck no you put out your 1 or 2 best and go hunting. These trials are a great social event and I loved that about them. However in my opinion and its only an opinion they should never be used to measure what type of gun dog you have.... I thought I was King of the world when my 13" male won his first two trials he was ever entered in. I found out shortly after that he wasn't what I wanted in a gun dog. I didn't want overcompetitive when I was in the woods trying to cirlce a hare. I'm not saying that there aren't dogs that win and place in trials that you can't taken hunting because there are plenty of them. I'm saying that almost every trial I have been to I have seen things that would cost you dearly on the snow in rough conditions. So I made up my mind since that is what brings me the most enjoyment that is where I will judge my dog.
hounds... hare.... hunter.... bang... what gets better than that.
